We are seeking multiple Registrar or Principal House Officers in General Medicine to practice at Mater Hospital Brisbane.  These full-time positions are available to start 3 February 2025.

The primary function of these positions is the provision of high quality clinical care to patients requiring medical services and to acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to satisfy the requirements of the RACP for specialist physician training. Mater is a teaching hospital of the University of Queensland and clinicians are eligible for academic appointment to the university.

Salary range: per hour plus 11.5% superannuation and access to not-for-profit salary packaging up to $15,900  + access to many staff benefits!

What you’ll be doing

Medical registrars or PHOs are expected to manage inpatients and outpatients across a variety of Internal Medical units. The successful applicant should be competent at history taking, physical examination, ordering appropriate investigations and implementing appropriate management plans, with Consultant supervision.  The successful applicant should be aware of quality and safety practices relevant to Internal Medicine. The position may include relief/night shifts and working at secondment sites.

Provide patient assessment and management in consultation with the treating consultant. This will involve attending acute and elective admissions under the team during normal working hours, review of inpatients and participating in ward rounds with consultants and outpatient clinics. It may include:

  • formulating plans of management and implementing the decisions of senior medical staff on patient care
  • determining, instigating, and following up appropriate investigations
  • performing procedures within your capabilities
  • coordinating appropriate consultation with other specialty departments and services
  • interacting with other health professionals, including nursing and allied health staff, in provision of ongoing clinical care to patients
  • maintaining the patient clinical record and ensuring appropriate and timely communication to other health care providers and carers to ensure ongoing patient care post hospital stay.
  • Provide supervision, feedback, teaching and support to junior medical staff and medical students. This includes serving as a professional role model for junior medical staff and students by demonstration of appropriate behaviour and attitude.
  • Communicate with patients and their families, where appropriate, about the patient’s diagnosis and management.
  • Development of professional knowledge and skills through active involvement in the educational programs of the hospital, network, and RACP, which may include attendance at tutorials, workshops and training courses, participation and presentation at hospital grand rounds, and other workplace-based training activities.
  • Participate in research activities of the clinical unit to which you are attached.  Participate in quality improvement activities such as audit and peer review, patient safety initiatives and reporting of clinical incidents.

About you

To be considered for the position applicants should have:

  • General medical registration with AHPRA, or at least 12 months of practice in Australia or a region of Competent Authority as determined by AHPRA
  • At least 2 years postgraduate experience
  • Experience in hospital-based internal medicine.
