About the role

Mater Refugee and Multicultural Health Service is seeking a Clinical Nurse (CN) to join the Multicultural Health Coordination team working part time 0.5 FTE on a maximum-term contract for 6 months.   

This is an exciting opportunity to join a high-performing team that includes specialist refugee and multicultural health nurses, doctors, social worker and administration staff and community engagement workers who are passionate about health access and equity for people of refugee and migrant backgrounds.  

Mater Multicultural Health Coordination Nurses provide nursing care, coordination, and health advocacy to individuals from refugee and other multicultural backgrounds in a variety of settings, including General Practices across Brisbane, Logan and Ipswich, the Mater Refugee Complex Care Clinic, community clinics and home environments.   

The hours of work will be Monday – Friday between 08:30 – 16:30. We require applicants to be available for minimum 0.5FTE (5 days per fortnight) and able to work primarily in Brisbane North and Inner South with occasional travel to Brisbane South, Logan and Ipswich (from base at Mater South Brisbane campus).  

We are seeking creative thinkers and problem-solvers with a high level of clinical skills, IT skills and communication skills.  

Salary range: $56.08 - $60.05 per hour (Registered Nurse Level 2) plus superannuation andaccess to not-for-profit salary packaging up to $15,900  +access to many staff benefits!

What you’ll be doing

Whilst displaying the highest level of clinical standards for the service you will be responsible for:  

  • Providing safe, individualised, compassionate care throughout the patient journey and continuum of care, integrating safety and quality frameworks and Person-Centred Care approach of caring for each patient’s psychological, social, emotional, spiritual, and physical care needs.   
  • Demonstrating advanced clinical expertise and knowledge of the Australian healthcare system and management of patients with complex health needs   
  • Building and maintaining relationships with key health stakeholders, and supporting cross-sectoral governance, relationships, and partnerships vital to appropriate management of health for people of Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CaLD) background.  
  • Providing expert clinical leadership in evidence-based, person-centred nursing interventions, planning and coordination of care including referrals to health and other services, patient education and other health promotion activities, and role model to and collaborate with the healthcare team.   
  • Conducting systematic, holistic assessments of patients’ health needs and health literacy using an outcome-based framework which is grounded in the social determinants of health to provide the highest standards of supportive care and care coordination  
  • Acting as a patient advocate to identify systems barriers and address, advocate and escalate within scope of practice. Ensuring patients are informed and consent is gained prior to treatment, investigation and management as appropriate and assist/negotiate sensitively with patients where there may be barriers to understanding.  
  • Supporting the Nurse Unit Manager in implementing strategies to ensure that quality and risk management are integrated into service provision  
  • Participating in developing and undertaking quality initiatives, data collection, clinical audits, clinical trials and research.  
  • Demonstrating application of advanced clinical leadership through effective delegation, communication, problem solving and critical thinking.   
  • Delegating to and supervising Registered Nurses (RNs) and undergraduate students as required consistent with the NMBA decision making framework and CN standards for practice.  
  • Complying with organisational policies, procedures, work instructions and guidelines  
  • Coordinating Nursing activities to optimise effective and efficient use of financial and human resources.  
  • Maintaining contemporary nursing specialist knowledge and skills to ensure continued professional growth knowledge, competence and capability.  
  • Contributing to and promoting a learning culture with Mater Refugee and Multicultural Health Service by encouraging reflection and professional development, providing clinical teaching, in-service education, and assisting/supporting others to maintain portfolios/records of learning.  
  • Promoting, maintaining, and adhering to Infection Control policies and practices  
  • Accurately completing required documentation and becoming a proficient user of Information Technology systems; once proficient remain current with changes, updates and contingencies.  
  • Ensuring confidentiality of corporate and patient information.  

About you

To be successful in this position, you will have:  

  • Current AHPRA nursing registration as a Registered Nurse (no restrictions)  
  • Class C driving licence   
  • Minimum 3 years’ clinical experience in at least one of the following specialist nursing fields: refugee health/ primary care/ rehabilitation/ disability/ paediatrics/ chronic disease 
  • Understanding of trauma-informed care and health equity and access issues for disadvantaged populations, with demonstrated experience in supporting clients to navigate these  
  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills including experience of working with peoples from diverse cultural backgrounds; engaging interpreters in a clinical setting, and the ability to liaise with a variety of different stakeholders both internally and externally at various levels.  
  • A strong work ethic, positive attitude and willingness to role model and promote the Mater values  
  • Demonstrated ability to operate both in a team environment and autonomously using initiative, sound reasoning and strong advocacy, listening, negotiation and decision-making skills  
  • High level of attention to detail and advanced level skills in coordination, time management, digital literacy, problem-solving and ability to escalate matters appropriately  
  • Commitment to ensuring the levels of service is always delivered to patients   

Desirable:  

  • Be a person of Culturally and Linguistically Diverse background   
  • Post-graduate studies (completed or currently enrolled) relevant to the role
