Position Title: Laboratory Supervisor

Department:  Chemistry

Term of Assignment: Continuing

Term End Date, If Applicable:             

FLSA Status:   Exempt = not eligible for overtime

Work Schedule: Typically Monday through Friday 8:00 am - 5:00 pm with occasional weekend and evening work required.

Salary: Targeted Salary Range: $46,080-$51,800

Travel: Less than 10%

Brief Statement of Duties

Brief Statement of Duties: Independently responsible for purchasing, management, preparation and maintenance of chemical supplies and small equipment for teaching laboratories, lecture demonstrations, and research laboratories. Provide safety training and support to all laboratory instructors and stockroom workers. Responsible for storage, inventory, and management of all department chemicals and chemical hazardous waste; and direct neutralization and/or disposal of chemical waste from teaching laboratories and departmental research.

Minimum Qualifications

Required Education: Bachelor's Degree

Discipline / Degree Area:  Chemistry or closely related field

Required Specialized Training/Certifications: 

Required Minimum Work Experience:  Experience handling chemicals and chemical waste.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, or Attributes Required for Satisfactory Performance of the Position Duties: 
Good organizational and time management skills.
Detail oriented and commitment to strict adherence to the OSHA Laboratory Safety Guidance and the MIOSHA Hazardous Work in Laboratories Regulations.
Excellent oral communication skills.
Ability to read and understand chemical SDSs, MIOSHA policies and regulations, NMU Chemical Hygiene Plan and other written external regulations, vendor protocols, and instrument handbooks.
Ability to use spreadsheets and other basic computer software.
Ability to learn budgeting and accounting practices.
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups of people.
Willingness to learn and adapt new methodologies.
Interest in laboratory teaching methods and ability to correct inefficient procedures.
Ability to train, supervise, and discipline NMU student employees.

Additional Desirable Qualifications

Additional Desirable Qualifications: 
M.S. Degree in Chemistry or related field.
Two years teaching chemistry or closely related laboratory classes at the university level.
Chemical Hygiene Officer training or willingness to complete.
Department of Labor OSHA safety training or willingness to complete.
Ability to repair small laboratory mechanical and/or electrical equipment or willingness to be trained.
