The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) is seeking an experienced and highly capable Principal Legal Officer with experience in Native Title to join our Legal team. This is an exciting opportunity to provide strategic legal advice on matters that shape the future of primary industries, natural resources, regional communities and government decision-making across New South Wales. 

Working as a senior member of the Legal team, you will deliver expert legal advice, manage legal risk, support critical government decisions and contribute to the successful delivery of departmental priorities. You will work across a diverse range of legal areas including administrative law, commercial and property law, native title and Aboriginal land rights, employment law, litigation, privacy and right to information. 

What you'll be doing 

• Providing strategic, risk-based legal advice to senior executives and stakeholders across the Department. 

• Drafting and reviewing complex legal documents, including legislation, contracts, agreements, Cabinet submissions and briefing materials. 

• Managing complex, sensitive and high-profile legal matters. 

• Building trusted relationships with clients and stakeholders across government. 

• Supervising and mentoring lawyers and contributing to the development of legal capability across the organisation. 

• Identifying legal risks and developing practical, solution-focused advice that supports business outcomes. 

About you 

You are a highly skilled legal professional with a strong track record of providing expert legal advice in complex environments. You are confident working autonomously, capable of balancing competing priorities and known for building productive relationships with stakeholders at all levels. 

To be successful you will bring: 

• Superior expertise in Native Title and at least one other relevant area of law. 

• Strong knowledge of administrative law and statutory interpretation. 

• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills. 

• Demonstrated ability to deliver high-quality legal services in complex and time-sensitive environments. 

• Experience leading work, mentoring others and contributing to a collaborative team culture. 

• A Bachelor of Laws and eligibility to hold a current NSW Practising Certificate.
