Aboriginal Education Services (AES) provide services to schools to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander learners to reach their learning potential and support all learners to understand and value Aboriginal and Torres Straight Isander histories and cultures.

AES works within the Support and Development Division of the Department for Education, Children and Young People (DECYP) developing inclusive strategies, policies and guidelines. These support:

  • Closing the gap in educational outcomes for Aboriginal students.

  • The teaching of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures. 

Guided by Tasmania's Aboriginal Education Framework. Our work acknowledges Tasmania's unique socio-cultural context. It responds to the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Strategy. 

AES work in collaboration with schools to provide support, guidance and professional learning opportunities to help you understand and develop in the role of Aboriginal Education Worker. Further information on the programs and services of AES can be found here.

Aboriginal Education Worker

Provide advice, support and assistance to school(s) to support relevant strategies and frameworks that contribute to improvement in the attendance, participation and educational outcomes of Aboriginal students, and the awareness and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures.

Salary Range: $64,821.00 - $69,764.00 pro rata, per annum - Tasmanian State Service Award, Band 2

Aboriginal Sharer of Knowledge

The Aboriginal Sharers of Knowledge (ASK) Program provides Tasmanian Government schools with opportunities to have Aboriginal Community members work alongside teachers to deliver learning opportunities, with a focus on the Australian Curriculum cross-curriculum priority. 

The ASK Program is coordinated by Aboriginal Education Services (AES) and Aboriginal Sharers of Knowledge collaborate with AES and teachers to design and deliver First Nations learning activities and programs.

Aboriginal Sharers of Knowledge provide high level advice and cultural expertise to the ASK Program.

Essential Requirements

  • The Head of the State Service has determined that this position is an Aboriginal Identified Position and that it can only be filled by Aboriginal people or Torres Strait Islanders in accordance with Employment Direction 10 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Employment in the Tasmanian State Service.

  • The Registration to Work with Vulnerable People Act 2013 requires persons undertaking work in a regulated activity to be registered. A regulated activity is a child related service or activity defined in the Registration to Work with Vulnerable People Regulations 2014. This registration must remain current and valid at all times whilst employed in this role and the status of this may be checked at any time during employment.
