The opportunity 

The role of Head of Pastoral Care – Residential works closely with the Residential Pastoral Care Managers (PCMs) to lead and support the provision and development of pastoral care in HammondCare residential service locations.

This is a permanent part-time role working 4 days per week with hybrid working options. 

This role involves supervision directly and indirectly of a team across multiple locations within NSW, and in Melbourne and Adelaide and will require travel.  Access to a car and an Australian driver’s licence is a requirement.

We are flexible if you are living in Sydney or Melbourne.

Duties include

Manage & Educate staff

  • Build a culture that models and empowers all staff to work within HC’s Mission in Action to achieve our purpose of improving quality of life for people in our care
  • Ensure Pastoral Care Managers and their direct reports have completed relevant training and compliance activities, and are supported to extend their skills in meeting the emotional and spiritual needs and goals of residents, including those living with dementia
  • Provide managerial supervision to, and act as a key support of Pastoral Care Managers (and Pastoral Care Coordinators as required), and act as a role model for staff and as an advocate for the HammondCare Mission, Motivation, and Mission In Action
  • Work with PC Managers to identify development goals of PC staff
  • In consultation with the General Manager Pastoral Care and Volunteer Services, ensure staffing levels for PC in Residential are established and maintained through recruitment and orientation to relevant services and facilities.

Service Delivery

  • Collaborate with Residential Leaders to ensure the delivery of personalised pastoral care to people and their families at key times during residents’ journey, from admission and settling in the residential community, through changes and deterioration, to the end of life, and afterwards.
  • Share pastoral expertise and coach staff and volunteers within HC Residential to meet the emotional and spiritual needs of residents and their families, through personalised individual engagement and meaningful group activities such as Chapel services and Carer Support groups.
  • Ensure residents of different faiths are supported as desired by appropriate clergy/faith representatives
  • Oversee the management of the Pastoral Care Volunteer teams in Residential facilities, including encouraging strategies for building the teams of PC volunteers.
  • Clarify, define and oversee the implementation of PC processes, procedures and quality improvement projects that facilitate better service delivery.
  • Develop and implement strategies to utilise technology (new and emerging) to support increased PC service delivery.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Foster strategic connections with key stakeholders such as Residential GM, Operations Managers, Residential Managers, and other key senior Managers within Residential, QSR and Enabling Services.
  • Attend Residential Leadership meetings (at behest of GM) and be an active contributor to discussions, projects and outcomes.
  • Liaise with and consult key stakeholders regarding new and existing opportunities for PC service delivery.

Continuous Improvement

  • The quality of Pastoral Care services delivered internally, through external religious leaders and by volunteers is monitored.
  • A Continuous Improvement Plan is developed in collaboration with the General Manager Pastoral Care.
  • Issues identified in ‘Quality Control’ processes are acted on and rectified.
  • Commitment to individual and team objectives is nurtured in Pastoral Care Managers

Who are you?

  • Commitment to engage and align with HammondCare’s Christian Mission, Motivation and Mission in Action.
  • Strong personal and active Christian faith and church involvement.
  • Significant Pastoral Care experience, preferably managing a team of pastoral care staff and/or volunteers.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and motivate people and to develop an effective team.
  • A high level thinker with excellent attention to detail and analytical skills, with the ability to balance both strategic and operational initiatives.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Exceptional relationship building skills.
  • Strong written, oral and interpersonal communication skills, with strong presentation/ public speaking and report writing skills.
  • Strong conflict resolution, negotiation and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong planning and organising skills.
  • A current driver’s licence and safe driving record. Willingness to travel between Hammond Care’s sites and services.

Highly Desirable

  • Ordination or accreditation as a minister in a recognised Christian denomination.
  • Bachelor Degree level training in discipline relevant to Pastoral Care.
  • Experience of operating effectively in a multi-site environment.
  • Practical experience in a people-management or leadership role including recruiting, selecting & onboarding staff.
  • Strong administrative and computer skills - intermediate with Microsoft Office.
  • A strong attitude of service and can demonstrate flexibility, creativity and initiative in their approach to work.
