Job Summary:

We are looking for a hydrogeologist to support the Underground Storage Tank (UST) Section’s Corrective Action Unit, which is responsible for regulatory oversight of Leaking UST cleanups, the Preapproval Program, and cleanup of state managed Leaking UST sites. The hydrogeologist will support the unit by reviewing groundwater monitoring reports, assisting with review of site characterization reports, conceptual site models, and groundwater/fate and transport models and their associated inputs. In addition, the hydrogeologist may create simple groundwater and/or fate and transport models to estimate contaminant plume extent and identify potentially impacted properties and receptors. Model results will provide additional insight into potential risks to public health and the environment and assist in determining if additional environmental sampling and remediation is required.


This position may be available for remote work within Arizona (3 days per week in the office/hoteling).

Job Duties:

Primary Duties include:
• Review routine regulatory reports (e.g., groundwater monitoring reports) and assist with review of complex reports (e.g., site characterization reports).
• Review soil and groundwater data to determine if contaminants are delineated at Leaking UST sites and to assess spatial and temporal trends to inform future corrective actions at Leaking UST sites.
• Review groundwater data to determine the direction of groundwater flow and hydraulic gradient for Leaking UST sites.
• Review of and development of groundwater fate and transport models and their associated inputs.
• Must be able to work a hybrid schedule in the downtown Phoenix office, which consists of 3 days in the office and two days working remote from home.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

• Knowledge of groundwater flow, contaminant transport, groundwater modeling, and groundwater model calibration is required.
• Ability to understand and apply environmental rules and statues; to follow guidance documents, standard operating procedures, and other technical instructions in performance of tasks; to prepare clear, concise and accurate reports; and to summarize completed tasks and/or monitoring data orally and in written communication.

Selective Preference(s):

• Bachelors of science degree in hydrogeology or hydrology
• Level 1: 0-2 years’ experience (Master’s degree or Doctorate may substitute for 2 years of experience)
• Level 2: 2-4 years’ experience (Master’s degree or Doctorate may substitute for 2 years of experience)
• Knowledge of and practical experience developing groundwater and contaminant transport models
• Direct experience with investigation/remediation projects using multiple investigation and remediation technologies at sites preferred
• Familiar with UST and Leaking UST rules and regulations preferred
• OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER preferred
