Job Summary: |
This position will work as a senior field and lab technician under the direct supervision of the Structures Lab Supervisor. This position will be assigned major projects and be responsible for sampling, testing and post pour inspection for major prestress/precast concrete structures, as well as minor precast items, such as concrete pipe, precast box culverts, MSE panels, retaining walls, manhole materials, etc. For these major projects, duties also include inspection and testing coordination with Structures Laboratory personnel, linear feet calculation and project finalization.
The technician performs American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials(AASHTO) and Arizona test methods and will work with various precast manufacturers to ensure project materials meet the project plans and specifications.
Duties require the review of test results, daily diaries, and project documents for compliance as well as notifying the supervisor or manager of any conflicts in contract documents regarding omissions, errors and/or beneficial changes, or any materials issues or deficiencies found or witnessed during production.
The technician will verify calibration of testing equipment and maintain project materials records. They will assist project personnel as needed and maintain equipment and facilities. Duties may require the technician to work weekends, holidays and varied work hours, in all weather conditions; including trips in and out of state.

Job Duties: |
Perform engineering construction inspection, sampling, and testing for major prestress/precast concrete structures. Daily decisions concerning material and quality of final products conform to plans and specifications. Lead and train other technicians in performing engineering construction inspection, sampling and testing for major prestress/precast concrete structures. Make daily decisions concerning material and quality of final products conform to plans and specs.
Sampling and testing using ASTM, AASHTO and/or AZ test methods to determine compliance with applicable specifications.
Perform engineering construction inspection, sampling and testing for minor precast concrete structures including concrete pipe, precast box culverts, MSE panels, retaining walls, manhole materials, etc.
Review test results, daily diaries, and project documents for compliance. Notify supervisor or manager of conflicts in contract documents regarding omissions, errors and/or beneficial changes.
Review Plans and Specifications.
Maintain equipment and facilities. Maintain assigned state vehicle and obey all policies while driving on state business.
Assist project personnel as needed.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs): |
Knowledge:
- Methods, procedures, and techniques used in sampling and testing of highway construction materials.
- Materials sampling and testing procedures based on ASTM AASHTO, Arizona test methods and specifications for Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG), Precast Institute (PCI) and Post-Tensioning Institute (PTI).
- Engineering principles and practices related to construction engineering.
- Federal, state and agency standards including policy and procedures applicable to highway construction.

This position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job and the following requirements apply. Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked nor suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R2-10-207.11).

American Concrete Institute (ACI) field certification, ACI laboratory certification
Arizona Technical Testing Institute (ATTI) field certification
ACI Masonry Field and ACI Masonry Lab must be obtained within one year
