Job Summary: |
As an Environmental Engineer in our Safe Drinking Water (SDW) Section you will provide technical and operational assistance through conducting site visits and working with public water systems in Arizona. You will also be responsible for training and mentoring SDW staff on the installation of water systems to meet our requirements as well as represent the Safe Drinking Water Section in the Operator Certification Program by training or leading discussions on various topics at Operator Certification events. Additional responsibilities include the review of complex engineering and design plans to support permitting requirements as part of our Technical Assistance program. Technical expertise in water treatment engineering, design and operation will be critical for the selected candidate in addition to customer service and mentorship of internal staff
This position is available for remote work on a full-time basis within Arizona (including virtual office arrangements).

Job Duties: |
● Review data reports, engineering design packages and other technical submittals from State contractors to the Technical Assistance program
● Conduct site visits and problem solve compliance issues with public water systems
● Provide technical assistance to help owners and operators meet regulatory requirements
● Provide guidance to staff and facilities on problems identified in technical reviews
● Assist in preparing internal and external engineering guidance documents
● Mentorship of staff
● Prepare engineering memos and other forms of technical writing for permits
● Proficient in the interpretation of the Arizona Administrative Code and relevant Arizona Revised Statutes relating to the Safe Drinking Water Act
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs): |
● An ability to perform at a high level independently and on teams with little guidance and supervision
● Considerable knowledge of principles and practices of civil or environmental engineering; State and Federal environmental regulations;
● Knowledge of Agency policies and processes and state and federal regulations regarding administration of Agency decisions
● Strong customer service skills; excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills; excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
● Ability to balance, prioritize and organize multiple tasks and complete assignments by applicable deadlines; to synthesize feedback and adjust plans accordingly; to understand and interpret environmental rules and statutes to determine whether permit applications or plans and reports meet the requirements or request legal interpretation for standard issues; to follow guidance documents, standard operating procedures, and other technical instructions in performance of tasks.
Selective Preference(s): |
● Bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering or related engineering field with a focus in one or more of the following; environmental, civil, or chemical engineering, other relevant fields. Master’s degree may substitute for 2 years of experience and Doctorate may substitute for 4 years of experience
●Level 3 - 5 years of experience, Level 4 - 8 years of experience, ADEQ Grades 3 or 4 operator Certification in Water Treatment or Distribution
● Associate Engineer position requires a Professional Engineer certification through the Arizona Board of Technical Registration
● If a candidate is considered as a level 3, an ‘Engineer-in-Training’ or ‘Fundamentals of Engineering’ certification is required through the Arizona Board of Technical Registration or equivalent organization in reciprocal jurisdiction.
● Preferred: Grade 4 Operator Certification(s) in Treatment & Distribution Systems
● Preferred: 5 Years of experience operating water treatment facilities or public water systems
