Job Summary:

This position is for an Underground Storage Tanks (UST) Compliance Officer. The position will be responsible for supporting UST inspectors with compliance and enforcement at regulated UST sites in Arizona, provide compliance assistance in the field or from the office on UST rules and improve compliance throughout the state of Arizona, reduce the number of open compliance cases by working with UST inspectors and UST owners and operators, and reducing new releases through outreach and compliance assistance, drafting compliance documentation, responding to customer concerns regarding USTs, active problem solving and strong stakeholder collaboration

This position is available for remote work on a full-time basis within Arizona (including virtual office arrangements).

Job Duties:

As an Environmental Science Specialist, you will be responsible for conducting compliance assistance activities for the UST Tank Inspections, Compliance, and Enforcement (TICE) unit, including conducting outreach to the UST owners/operators, conducting compliance assistance site visits to customers with open compliance conditions, review available information, use scientific principles for the purpose of assessing compliance with Arizona statutes and rules, create compliance documentation, and assisting with compliance management.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

• Working knowledge of UST state and federal rules and statutes, and the ability to effectively communicate requirements and standards to customers of all experience and knowledge levels
• Knowledge of Agency policies and processes, interpret State and Federal environmental regulations, environmental
sciences and research, AZ sources of pollution, best practices for preventing the release of pollutants, environmental research, investigation techniques and statistical analysis
• Ability to understand and apply environmental rules and statues; to follow guidance documents, standard operating procedures, and other technical instructions in performance of tasks; to prepare clear, concise and accurate reports; and to summarize completed tasks and/or monitoring data orally and in written communication
• Experience in project management, MS Office, customer service/outreach and aptitude for problem solving is desired
• Strong organizational skills and ability to schedule, conduct and manage multiple projects at the same time

Selective Preference(s):

• Bachelor’s degree in environmental/chemical engineering, environmental/earth science, environmental
management/studies, and/or sustainability
• Level 2: Requires 2 years’ experience
• Level 3: Requires 5 years’ experience (Masters may substitute for 2 years, Doctorate 4 years). Professional in Training through the Arizona Board of Technical Registration or an equivalent organization required.
