DEPT OF HEALTH SERVICESThe Arizona State Hospital (ASH) provides inpatient psychiatric care to persons with serious mental illness who need long-term behavioral health care. ASH promotes hope and wellness for our patients and creates opportunities to participate in planning, delivering and evaluating services that assist with recovery. Treatment is individualized with goals that focus on education about an illness, instilling hope and improving one's overall quality of life. The Arizona State Hospital has a wide range of positions available, from our direct care staff, Nurses and Behavioral Health Technicians to Social Workers, Rehabilitation Specialist and Security to name a few. The Arizona State Hospital also offers 12 hour shifts for our Direct Care staff as well as some alternative work schedules, flexible hours for non-direct care staff. Job Summary: |
The Physician II works under the general direction of the Medical Director. This position Is responsible for performing general medical diagnosis and treatment; providing medical assessment and consultation; acts on behalf of the Medical Director; performing In a variety of public health medical programs areas; and is the entry level for position In an assigned medical specialty.
Job Duties: |
- Performs a variety of professional general medical and medical specialty services, such as conducting medical examinations, making diagnoses, prescribing and administering medications and medical treatments.
- Performs minor surgery and administers anesthetics.
- Acts on behalf of the Medical Director.
- Stands duty for night and emergency calls.
- Participates in consultations and medical staff meetings.
- Participates in education and training programs.
- Other duties as assigned as related to the position
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs): |
Knowledge of:
-Principles and practices of general medicine and public health as required; basic principles and practices of psychiatry; and principles and practices of minor surgery.
-Performance Management (PM), and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) and Lean methodologies.
Skill In:
- Diagnosing and the use of medical knowledge.
Ability to:
- Administer medical treatment and diagnostic or public health programs; direct work of professional staff; apply prior knowledge of training to unusual and varied medical and/or psychiatric and /or public health conditions; work effectively with others; and speak and write effectively.

Selective Preference(s): |
- Knowledge of primary medicine and specialty in Family Medicine but experience In a primary care setting would offset this.
Pre-Employment Requirements: |
- Must possess a doctor's degree from an accredited School of Medicine or approved School of Osteopathic Medicine; completion of an approved Internship; and completion of an approved program as required for board eligibility in the designated specialty OR Two years of experience equivalent to a Physician I. Some assignments a Master's degree in Public health may substitute for the specialty training.
- Possession of regular, temporary or limited license to practice medicine In Arizona granted by the Arizona State Board of Medical Examiners or the Arizona State Board of Osteopathic Examiners.
- Requires possession of and ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver's license appropriate to the assignment Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver's license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records and must complete any required driver training (see Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.12).

To help you build a financially secure future, the State makes monthly contributions to finance your retirement benefit. The State will make a contribution to the ASRS in an amount equal to your contribution. In other words, you and the State will each pay 50% of the total cost of the benefit.
