Job Summary: |
The position is responsible for supervising and providing exploratory services including pavement coring and test pit excavations for ADOT projects, in addition to supporting ADOT Geotechnical Services with a variety of field tasks. These services are critical during the early design stages of projects which provide the project staff with the necessary data to complete
their design.

This position may offer the ability to work remotely, within Arizona, based upon the department's business needs and continual meeting of expected performance measures.

Job Duties: |
Operate equipment, obtain samples and perform field testing for geotechnical exploration including pavement coring and backhoe test pits. Assists crew with detailed specialized logging and classification of soil and rock samples. Load, unload and transport heavy equipment statewide. Perform routine preventative maintenance, safety inspection and cleaning equipment. Drives State vehicles in scope of duties. Provides assistance to engineers during forensic investigations.
Project Layout - Physically walk project to survey and mark exploration location, Determine exploration locations based on visible geology, and available plan sheet, ADOT exploration guidelines, GPS, equipment access limitations and environmental restrictions.
Operates and conducts readings with inclinometer equipment.
Training - attend courses required to keep certifications, updated testing techniques, mandatory ADOT training, job refreshing and technology transfer.
Environmental requirements - Ensure that all SWPPP and environmental Impact statements archaeological green light and historical clearances are in order. Conduct geotechnical exploration in compliance with the ADOT Statewide Permit for Discharge to Waters of the US.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs): |
Knowledge:
Surveying, mapping, and GPS equipment.
Basic soils and rock materials, field testing equipment related to logging and sampling materials.
Safety regulations and work ethics.
Skills:
Handling and maneuvering heavy loads on mountainous roads and tight areas for safe and legal transport of vehicles and heavy equipment.
Reading engineering plans, using cross sections and profiles to locate test pit sites, or pavement coring locations.
Operating all machinery associated with position.
Operate inclinometer equipment.
Ability:
Load and unload equipment safely on and near State highways.
Adapt to job site conditions such as weather, terrain, and traffic for operation of heavy equipment.
Assess adverse condition in terrain and anticipate potential problems in the investigative phase of projects.
Ability to coach and develop employees, including continuous improvement practices and principles
Selective Preference(s): |
Ability to operate manual transmissions on vehicles.
Pre-Employment Requirements: |
This position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job and the following requirements apply. Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked nor suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R2-10-207.11).
Radiation certification.
Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with no automatic-only restriction.
