Job Summary: |
This position will serve as a technician in the Tucson Regional Laboratory under the direct supervision of the Tucson Regional Lab supervisor and perform technical and specialized laboratory tests for acceptance and research testing. Performs a full range of laboratory testing on soil composition, surfacing materials aggregate, asphalt mix, oil and water content, embankment compaction, plant mix density and factors as require in accordance with American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) and Arizona test methods. Reports test results to laboratory lead worker and complete computer input into FAST database when required. Assist in proper maintenance, calibration and repair of laboratory equipment. Assist with field sampling as required.
Job Duties: |
Perform tests in laboratory on soil composition, surfacing materials aggregate, asphalt mix, oil and water content, embankment compaction, plant mix density, and factors as required. Assist with field sampling
Perform calculations and reporting of test performed in laboratory.
Input test results in FAST database and maintain and calibrate testing equipment used in the laboratory.
Drive a state vehicle in accordance with policies and attend mandatory trainings and meetings.
Obtain the certifications listed in the training matrix.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs): |
KNOWLEDGE
- Methods, procedures, and techniques used in sampling and testing highway construction materials.
- Materials and equipment used for highway construction.
- Principles and practices of engineering and materials inspection.
- Operation and maintenance of a variety of materials testing and inspection measuring devices.
SKILL
- Testing hot mix asphalt, liquid asphalt, and soils and aggregates.
- Reading and mathematics.
- Verbal and written communication.
- Various computer programs, including Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and FAST.
ABILITY
- Perform complex mathematical calculation in materials testing.

Valid driver's license - This position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job, and the following requirements apply. Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked nor suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R2-10-207.11).
Must obtain Arizona Technical Testing Institute (ATTI) Soil certification within 12 months of hire.
Must obtain American Concrete Institute (ACI) Concrete Strength certification within 12 months of hire.
Must obtain Arizona Technical Testing Institute (ATTI) Asphalt certification within 18 months of hire.
Must obtain Arizona Technical Testing Institute (ATTI) Field certification within 24 months of hire.
Must obtain American Concrete Institute (ACI) Field certification within 24 months of hire.
