| Job Summary: |
Responsible for assisting with the management of all aspects of the Arizona Department of Education's (ADE) data including but not limited to:
• Database backup and recovery
• Logical and physical database design
• Designing and writing stored procedures
• Disaster recovery
• Database maintenance, connectivity, replication, performance and tuning, upgrades, naming conventions and standards
• Installation and configuration of database software (SQL Server)
• Diagnosing and correcting database operational problems
• Strong PowerShell scripting skills for jobs automation
• Configure and support Power BI datasets, gateways, and refresh schedules
• Design and develop stored procedures, functions, and triggers
• Develop and optimize complex SQL queries and stored procedures for reporting and analytics
• Design and implement ETL processes for data integration and transformation
• Collaborate with application and BI teams to support data-driven solutions
• Implement version control and DevOps practices for database objects
• Occasional in-state travel is required for this position
The Arizona Department of Education currently utilizes a hybrid work environment, with up to two days of remote work (contingent upon business needs). Candidates should apply with an ability and willingness to work in-office up to five days per week as business needs necessitate.
| Job Duties: |
• Assist and cross-train in the work of other database administrators
• Review and recommend improvements to existing architecture
• Tune performance, review, and recommend improvements to existing code
• Meet with other IT staff to determine scope of system requirements related to data storage, retrieval, and performance
• Design and code stored procedures and scripts to facilitate database administration (Powershell experience desired)
• Develop database administration tools/utilities/operation procedures
• Assist in developing purge/archive criteria and procedures for historical application data
• Proactively solve complex problems
• Review, evaluate, design, implement and maintain company database[s]
• Implement and review appropriate security guidelines/mechanisms
• Implement database migrations and changes
• Management of Azure database virtual machines
• Troubleshoot application key selection, creation of appropriate indexes, and query needs
• Ensure that databases are operational and functioning properly
• Perform database maintenance functions
• Move, rebuild, or change database objects as required in production
• Develop and test database migration procedures
• Manager Power BI Configuration
• Assist in interviewing and training new hires and provide guidance to Junior Developers when required
• Manage SQL Server Always On configurations
• Provide on-call support to correct database issues or assist with other processes that require off-hours support
• Educate users and maintains database documentation
• Establish database procedures and standards; assists in database design
• Writing PowerShell scripting
• Design, develop, and optimize stored procedures, functions, and queries
• Implement indexing strategies for performance improvement
• Build and maintain SSIS packages for ETL workflows
• Other duties as assigned as related to the position

Knowledge in:
• General working knowledge of physical data models, technical architecture, system interfaces, etc.
• Database Software: SQL Server 2000 - SQL Server 2022
• Hardware installation and configuration (Azure)
• SQL Server Clustering
• Transact-SQL and stored procedure design
• Database performance tuning and replication
• Disaster recovery planning
• Backup/recovery planning

• A Bachelor’s degree plus five or more years of experience in database administration, or equivalent experience to substitute for the degree, is required.
Skills can be acquired by trouble shooting software and hardware issues in a generic computer environment. Logical prowess can be cultivated in basic mathematics training, puzzle solving, formal logic training.
