Job Summary:

This position plans, coordinates and provides day-to-day supervision of line operations at ports of entry or field enforcement offices; assists subordinates with interpreting and communicating the provisions of state and federal motor vehicle codes pertaining to registration, operator licensing, tax credential, financial responsibility, size/weight and vehicle safety requirements. Supervise and conducts inspections of commercial motor vehicles at terminals, ports of entry, etc. Background check and in-state travel is required.

Job Duties:

Counsels, instructs and evaluates subordinates in proper work methods and requirements; reviews work of subordinates, evaluates performance and ensures compliance to required duties; makes planner entries, reviews progress and conducts annual evaluations; schedules and assigns work to subordinates.

Border Position, performs CVSA inspections. Field Inspections, performs vehicle identify inspections and registration compliance details. Port of Entry, participate in size and weight enforcement and CVSA inspections.

Confers with area supervisors, peers and management staff; prepares reports and gathers statistical analyses from work products; interacts with other agencies, testifies in court; plans, coordinates and oversees enforcement details; reviews, investigates and resolves complaints from either the public or internal sources; keeps leaders informed on progress of investigations.

• Pertinent state and federal motor vehicle laws, rules and regulations, Title 17, Title 28, ECD policies and procedures
• Law enforcement practices, procedures
• International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) requirements
• Enhanced vehicle identification inspection process, techniques and procedures
• Commercial vehicle inspections
• Investigative techniques and methods
• ADOT non-discrimination policies
• HazMAT regulations and procedures
• Supervisory principles and technique
• Size and weight enforcement, permit sales, ADOT accounting policies and procedures

Skills in:

• Supervising subordinates
• Interpreting relevant state and federal transportation/motor vehicle laws, rules and regulations
• Establishing and maintaining effective relationships with staff members and the public

Previously served as a certified peace officer in Arizona, another state, or federal
agency, and meet all of the minimum qualifications for certification.

Selective Preference(s):

Experience as an Enforcement Field Officer. Experience as an operational supervisor in law enforcement or a regulatory program.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

The following is required for this position:
Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training (AZPOST) Full Authority certifications.
Weapons certified in accordance with AZPOST standards and CVSA certified.
Valid driver's license.

Individuals who have served honorably as a peace officer in Arizona and their certification has lapsed, or served in another State may be eligible to gain Arizona POST certification through Waiver Testing. Physical Ability Test (PAT) is required for all Waiver Testing. 

As this position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job, then the following requirements apply. Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked nor suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R2-10-207.11).
