Job Summary:

This position performs advanced-level traffic engineering for the State’s Intelligent Transportation System (ITS). This position designs, analyzes, programs, and updates systems that monitor real-time traffic conditions.

Adjusts traffic light timing in response to changing traffic conditions. This position will manage complex infrastructures, including traffic controllers and smart sensors. Develops the Synchro Model program for statewide arterial roadways.

This position performs electrical and lighting engineering functions. This position will require some after hours and weekend remote signal timing for planned and unplanned closures.

This position may offer the ability to work remotely, within Arizona, based upon the department's business needs and continual meeting of expected performance measures.

Job Duties:

Develop traffic signal phasing and timing plans. This includes various types of data collection, analysis and computer modeling using traffic signal optimizations programs, such as SYNCHRO & WaySync, and includes other signal timing modeling tools. Implement traffic signal timing plans and monitor performance. Monitoring in the Traffic Operations Center (TOC) changing signal timing or signal timing plans.

Collaborate with local agencies, law enforcement and other Internal ADOT stakeholders in the development and implementation of traffic signal timing plans. Develops and executes various Inter-governmental Agreements. Research and develop traffic signal specifications. Prepare various reports, plans, schedules and project needs.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge of:
*Transportation related engineering properties and procedures.
*Federal and State Regulations involving construction, engineering, and environmental procedures.
*Current civil engineering practices and procedures.
*Knowledge of the most current Edition of the MUTCD.
*Department's design standards a plus.
*Engineering fundamentals such as traffic concepts, mathematics, and basic statistics.
*Knowledge of Google Workspace.

Skill in:
*Analytical Skills.
*Researching, reading and interpreting technical engineering documents.
*Oral and written communication skills.
*Comprehend and use of programs and devices.
*Analyze data.
*Research and evaluate alternatives.
*Computer software and tools needed to prepare analysis/presentations.

*Read and interpret state of the art information regarding complex transportation related issues.
*Exercise considerable engineering judgment when dealing with non-routine situations.
*Operate a computer and use specialized software to input.
*Represent agency in regional transportation meetings.
*Handle public complaints on traffic conditions.
*Work signal spacing data.
*Electrical engineering principles.
*Utilizes Computer Aided Design (CAD) programs to analyze engineering plans and blueprints.

Selective Preference(s):

Engineer-In-Training certification is preferred but not required.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

This position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job and the following requirements apply. Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked nor suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R2-10-207.11).

Valid AZ Driver's License.
