Job Summary:

Under the Section Manager's supervision, this position manages unit operations, including staff supervision, training, and performance monitoring. The role ensures work products are technically sound, accurate, and compliant with all State and Federal regulations. Key responsibilities include reviewing technical reports and legal documents, participating in decision-making and problem resolution, championing continuous improvement, developing policies, and managing high-profile projects.

This position is available for remote work on a full-time basis within Arizona (including virtual office arrangements).

Job Duties:
  • Management and supervision of staff and operations, including training/coaching and disciplinary actions as needed. Manage unit budget in order to be aware of financial resources for staff training, strategic hiring, purchasing of necessary equipment/software, and travel (in and out of state). Ensures the unit is in compliance with program goals, state and federal rules and regulations, and grant requirements.
  • Functions as a technical and regulatory resource for staff, supervisors, stakeholders, customers, and the general public. Act as a decision maker on unit level decisions, as necessary and appropriate.
  • Maintains communication within the agency and outside the agency by attending staff meetings, stakeholder
    meetings and outreach functions. Responds to internal and external information requests for compliance and enforcement, and general regulatory requirements.
  • Supports the section in meeting performance measures by developing and participating in process improvement projects and develops revised processes that increase work efficiency, quality and output. Ensure performance and flow boards are being properly used by staff and updates upper management by tracking and reporting applicable agency performance measures.
  • Prepares annual reports. Assists with the preparation of reports, budget projects and expenditures.

  • Data analysis, testing methods, contract/grants administration, and community involvement principles.
  • State and federal environmental regulations, department policies, and agency program functions.
  • Arizona Management System (AMS) concepts, tools, and continuous problem-solving principles.

  • Establish program priorities and implement operating policies and procedures based on program needs.
  • Analyze statutes and policies regarding complex scientific determinations and state legal standards.
  • Build effective working relationships with government officials, the regulated community, and the public.
  • Direct technical experts to achieve performance measures and refine unit activity metrics.
  • Exercise professional judgment to execute decisions independently or within a team environment.
  • Ability to be in the office as needed.
Selective Preference(s):
  • Bachelor of Science degree in the field of environmental science, environmental management, environmental or chemical engineering, biology, hydrology, or other environmental discipline
  • 5-10 years of environmental experience in a regulatory agency, consulting, or private industry
  • 5 years of supervisory/leadership experience
