Job Summary:

Serves as a lead technician. Performs a variety of highly technical activities related to inspection on highway construction projects, hot mix plants and concrete plants. Inspects and documents the most complex contract items. Assists the project supervisor in the review of construction and documentation. Provides direction, coaching, and mentoring to lower level inspectors. Assists project supervisors in scheduling, mentoring inspection staff. Serves as a primary contact for contractors, consultants, and ADOT employees on minor construction projects or segments of major construction projects.

Job Duties:

Inspect construction actives and contract items to ensure compliance with ADOT standard specifications, standard drawings, project specific special provision and plans, as well as applicable Federal laws, rules and policies and Arizona Department of Environmental Quality requirements. Use a State Vehicle in the course of these duties. 

Prepares field documentation and verifies field calculations for input to the PEN and FAST systems.

Reviews technical problems and develop procedures and recommendations for the resolution of issues related to assignment.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge of:

  • Methods, procedures, and techniques used in highway construction project inspections, materials testing and documentations.
  •  Environmental best management practices.
  • Project related contract plans, specifications, and documentation.
  • Federal, State and agency standards, policies and procedures.
  •  Approved record keeping and documentation procedures.
  • Materials equipment used for highway construction and material testing. 
  • Google Workspace, Microsoft programs and Adobe Acrobat.

Skill in:

  • Intermediate to advanced mathematics.
  • Analysis and preparation of data.
  • Use of computer software to document and analyze data.
  • Time management.
  • Verbal and written communication.
  • Interpersonal relations.

Ability to:

  • Safely drive full size pickup truck on and off roadways.
  • Work outdoors for an extended time with exposed to heat, cold, dust, noise, and near high speed traffic.
  • Manage time to ensure that duties are completed in an acceptable and timely manner.
  • Maintain positive communications under difficult situations.
Selective Preference(s):

Four years experience or two years journey level experience in inspection of highway construction, hot mix and concrete plans or performing administrative or advanced engineering and construction records maintenance and related duties. A Bachelor's degree in engineering or closely related curriculum may be substituted for the experience.

Pre-Employment Requirements:

This position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job, and  the following requirements apply. Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked nor suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R2-10-207.11).

Must acquire ACI & ATTI certifications within 12 months of hire.

Must complete ATSSA technician certification training within 12 months of hire.
