Student employees in the Trades Technology Department will assist with:

Lansing Community College, in collaboration with Michigan State University and the Lansing School District, is excited to offer a unique opportunity through the Building Training and Assessment Center (BTAC). This program is designed to build and expand a knowledgeable and diverse energy workforce pipeline by educating and training college-level students in HVAC, energy systems, and related topics through a structured, hands-on educational experience. The goal is to provide students with real-world experience while making a measurable impact on local K-12 schools and small commercial buildings (under 50,000 square feet) by helping reduce their energy use, operational costs, and carbon footprint.

Student employees are involved in a range of meaningful activities, including learning how energy-consuming equipment and processes work, analyzing utility bills to establish baseline energy usage, and calculating energy, cost, and carbon savings. Under the guidance of program faculty, each student participates in approximately two to three assessments per semester, where they help identify and quantify energy-saving opportunities for clients. Students also collaborate with facility personnel to plan assessments, conduct site visits, and prepare professional reports that summarize findings and recommendations. The assessment process includes a pre-assessment meeting with plant personnel, an on-site visit to identify opportunities for energy efficiency and operational improvements, and a post-assessment phase that involves data analysis, working with utility providers for financing options, and preparing a final report.

Work is available during the academic year and over the summer, with flexible scheduling based on assessment needs. Students will engage with a diverse network of peers, faculty, and clients, and receive training in energy efficiency, waste reduction, and assessment methods. We are looking for students from a variety of majors who are curious, motivated, and eager to learn new skills. Ideal candidates are strong communicators, team players, and problem-solvers who are passionate about sustainability and energy efficiency. A multi-semester commitment is preferred, ideally spanning from Spring through Fall of 2025–2027. Time commitment will vary depending on assessment schedules, with each assessment requiring approximately 24 hours of work. Students will be expected to participate in assessments at commercial and industrial buildings and contribute to training, outreach, teamwork, and report writing.

Regular on campus presence is expected for all LCC employment. Any flexible work schedules and/or hybrid work schedules approved by the College are subject to change based on the needs of the LCC community.

Requirements for LCC Student Employment:

The primary purpose of student employment is to provide current LCC students the opportunity to acquire job skills and experiences during semesters in which they are attending classes as follows:
• Enrolled and actively attending the following total LCC credit hours by semester
- Fall and/or Spring Semester(s) = 6.0 credits minimum (taken over 16-week period)
- Summer Semester = 3.0 credits minimum (taken over 8-week period)
• 2.00 GPA minimum (unless it’s student's first semester of enrollment at LCC and/or granted approval to waive requirement from the Student Employment Coordinator)
Note: International students (i.e. F-1 visa holders w/ valid I-20 issued by LCC) must meet the following minimum enrollment requirements each semester, in order to maintain employment eligibility per United States Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS):
- Fall and/or Spring Semester(s) = 12.0 credits min. (taken over 16-week period)
- Summer Semester = 3.0 credits min. (taken over 8-week period)
