Pay Grade: Court Officer Training Specialists receive their regular court officer salary in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement plus an additional $3,000 annual stipend, paid out over 26 pay periods.

Contingent on successful performance, appointments as a Court Officer Training Specialist shall be for a 24-month term, with an option for the Director of Security to offer subsequent 12-month extensions with the agreement of the incumbent Court Officer Training Specialist. Without an extension, upon completion of an appointment term as a Court Officer Training Specialist, the court officer will be returned to their previous assignment or other comparable assignment as determined by the applicable collective bargaining agreement. Salary for this position will be consistent with the current NAGE salary schedule for Court Officers.

Position Summary: The MA Trial Court Security Department is looking for interested and motivated Court Officers to submit their resume to become a Court Officer Training Specialist. This is a voluntary role for those who are interested. Court Officer Training Specialists receive a yearly stipend of $3,000 for their compliance with the Court Officer Training Specialist expectations described herein, and as directed by the Security Department.

Interested candidates must meet the following criteria in the respected areas of Instructions.

Supervision Received:  Receives general direction from the Chief Court Officer of Training and/ or the Associate Director of Standards & Training in performing duties in accordance with established guidelines.

Duties:

  • Participates as an instructor during training programs based on qualifications/certifications and at the discretion of the Associate Director of Standards & Training and/or Chief Court Officer of Training.
  • Works under the supervision of the Associate Director of Standards & Training and/or Chief Court Officer of Training in assessing training needs throughout the Security Department; assisting in the development of training programs to address those needs.
  • Assists in the development of the in-service training curriculum as well as related programs.
  • Assists in the development of policy and procedure as it relates to academy training and security operations with the assistance of the Associate Director of Standards & Training and/or Chief Court Officer of Training.
  • May participate and assist with audits as they pertain to operations and academy accreditation.
  • Assists in the development of the Court Officer academy curriculum under the direction of the Associate Director of Standards & Training and/or Chief Court Officer of Training.
  • Serves at the Court Officer Academy during academy training as a "Academic Coordinator, Group Liaison, EMT, Academic Instructor, Health & Wellness Instructor, or Health & Wellness Coordinator" based on skills and abilities as well as what is needed to meet the demands of academy training.
  • Assists in the tracking of enrollment and participation of Security Department personnel in training activities through the use of an electronic database for a Security Department geographic Region.
  • Communicates with the Associate Director of Standards & Training and/or Chief Court Officer of Training relative to standards and training and participates in monthly meetings.
  • Attends meetings and professional development workshops in order to enhance and update Security Training Programs, and to maintain any required certifications at the discretion of the Associate Director of Standards & Training and/or Chief Court Officer of Training.
  • Assists in modifying and updating Security Department personnel training programs to meet changing departmental standards with the assistance of the Associate Director of Standards & Training and/or Chief Court Officer of Training.
  • Travels statewide occasionally beyond a normal workday, and at times on weekends as necessary to security connected facilities to coordinate and/or oversee training and educational programs.
  • Maintains professional development and instructor certifications in Defensive Tactics, First Responder, ALICE, or other subject areas and serves as lead instructor during in-service and at Academies.
  • Must successfully complete instructor certification programs and maintain those certifications as required.
  • May be assigned as a Defensive Tactics, First Responder, ALICE, or In-Service Coordinator overseeing instructors in a respective discipline and responsible for the coordination of trainings, certifications, and curriculum with the assistance of the Associate Director of Standards & Training and/or Chief Court Officer of Training.
  • Responsible for providing and/or arranging audio/visual AV equipment to scheduled trainings within the region.
  • Receive and maintain confidential documents on unprotected exposures Must successfully complete all in-service trainings as required.
  • Coordinates attendance for scheduled court officer training with Assistant Chiefs, Chief Court Officers and Regional Directors of Security; and, Accepts other job responsibilities as they relate to Standards & Training at the discretion of the Associate Director of Standards & Training or designee.

Minimum Requirements:

  • One (1) year of full-time experience working in the Security Department as a Court Officer; and,
  • Two (2) years of experience supporting training activities in the areas of security operations, law enforcement, and/or corrections is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge/experience in the one or more of the following areas preferred: Defensive Tactics, First Responder, ALICE, Health & Wellness, EMT, and/or Teaching (Train/Trainer). Possession of instructor certification(s), or the ability to obtain certification, from the Massachusetts Police Training Committee (MPTC) or other certifying body recognized by the Director of Security in one or more of the areas of training delivered by the Trial Court Security Department.
  • Possess the computer skills necessary to work with Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, as well as the ability to work with a learning management system (LMS), and Blue Team.
  • Effective communication skills. Must have great organizational skills and the ability to multiĀ­-task.
  • Must have an employment history that reflects a commitment to professional development. Must be able to travel statewide and during hours outside the normal workday.
  • Must be able to work weekends and evenings as needed.
  • State Vehicle: Court Officer Training Specialists are authorized access to utilize a state vehicle if necessary and available in the performance of their job duties. Court Officer Training Specialists must abide by the Trial Court Policies and Procedures as it pertains to the use a state-owned vehicle.
  • Work Location: Court Officer Training Specialists will be assigned to a courthouse within commuting distance of their residence as office space permits and may conduct training activities at locations across the state as required. During training, the temporary work location will be the training site of the academy. The Massachusetts Trial Court reserves the right to designate other academy training sites based on availability of these facilities.

Selection Process

  1. All candidates who apply will have their resume and cover letter reviewed by a member of the Security Department to see that candidates meet the minimum requirements.
  2. The Director of Security or designee will consult with the Regional Director of Security, immediate Supervisor, and/or other employees who may be knowledgeable of an employee's work performance for all candidates who meet minimum qualifications to assess their work performance record. Those who do not move forward from this point, will be notified via email.
  3. Those who meet the requirements will be scheduled for the physical ability test, in which they will need to submit a waiver stating they are physically able to safely participate.
  4. Candidates will be scheduled for an interview with a panel, one of which will be a nonĀ­ management Assistant Chief Court Officer or Court Officer possessing knowledge of the Court Officer Training Specialist program.
  5. Based on the number of available openings and taking into account the operational needs of the Security Department as well as geographic considerations, officers will be selected by the Director of Security. Those who have been selected will be notified via email to attend MPTC certification training which is ten days.
  6. The Director of Security or designee will also notify candidates via email, who are not selected.
  7. The list of selected candidates will be maintained for two years from the closing date of the application submittal process.
