Job Description:
Responsible for developing, maintaining, and managing The University of Toledo’s Workers’ Compensation Program. Implements all matters of the program including but not limited to claim investigation and processing, Third Party Administrator (TPA) and Managed Care Organization (MCO) oversight, and litigation in a manner which promotes the UToledo mission of improving the human condition.
Manages the day-to-day activities of all workers’ compensation claims for all University Campuses. This task includes: interaction between Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation, TPA and MCO; facilitating transitional/modified duty program; analyzing and investigating injury reports for compensability; assisting legal counsel at the Industrial Commission; reviewing claims for settlement potential; making recommendations to Health & Safety for training based on injury trends; and updating Human Resources personnel on work comp leaves of absence.
Assists the Director of Risk Management & Insurance with coordinating the University’s risk management and insurance programs, identifying potential risks, and supporting efforts to prevent or reduce losses.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Risk Management or a directly related field, plus three (3) years of work experience administering and adjusting workers’ compensation claims. Will accept an equivalency of 7 years of direct workers compensation management.
• Comprehensive knowledge of the Ohio Workers’ Compensation system, law/rules, actuarial processes and claims management procedures.
• Strong analytical, time management and organizational skills.
• Knowledge of regarding changing legislation, BWC and Industrial Commission policies and procedures accordingly.
• Deep understanding of state and federal workers' compensation statutes, employment laws (like ADA and FMLA), and OSHA reporting mandates.
• Familiarity with claims administration best practices, medical terminology, reserving procedures, and risk management principles.
• Ability to build trusted relationships across all organizational tiers and navigate emotionally charged or difficult situations with empathy.
• High-level ability to maintain strict confidentiality regarding sensitive employee and medical information.
• Exceptional written and oral communication skills to explain complex claim processes to injured workers and present data to leadership
