As an art preparator, you will collaborate with curators and other staff to oversee and execute exhibitions, including developing exhibition designs and layouts. You will manage the transportation, handling, and storage of artwork, as well as the safe setup of fashion exhibits, paintings, sculptures, and more. You will help build necessary display props, structures, frames, plinths, and platforms for exhibitions. Additionally, you will operate electronic lifts, scaffolding, ladders, and tools to install works, ensuring that complex, delicate setups are completed accurately and carefully. You will also make sure lighting and environmental conditions are suitable for displays. Responsibilities include compliance with safety regulations and best art handling practices, as well as the implementation of security measures to protect artwork and gallery spaces.

In this role, you will assist with consultations between SCAD Art Sales and external art collectors or businesses. You will manage artwork inventories, including those on display, in storage, or on loan, and ensure storage areas are organized to maintain artwork integrity. You will also handle exhibition supplies and materials and coordinate the shipping and receipt of art and exhibition-related items. Responsibilities include the preparation of gallery spaces for exhibitions; the coordination of the installation of display cases, mannequins, pedestals, and other exhibition components with various departments; and the oversight of the framing and matting of artwork. Additionally, you will regularly inspect artwork and gallery spaces for damage or deterioration and perform basic conservation tasks, coordinating with conservators as needed. Likewise, you will maintain accurate records of condition reports and treatments.

The ideal candidate demonstrates strong attention to detail and performs well both independently and in a team setting. They have excellent organizational, woodworking, or construction skills. The candidate is also passionate about art and design, proficient in conservation techniques, and capable of handling a wide range of artworks. They can work some evenings and weekends as needed.

Minimum qualifications:  

• At least two years of art preparatory and installation experience
• Familiarity with art gallery and museum standards
• Computer proficiency, including experience with gallery management software
• Ability to pass DOT and SCAD requirements for driving 16–26 box trucks (C class)
• Able to work evenings and weekends

Preferred qualifications: 

• Bachelor's degree in art, art history, museum studies, or related field
