As an accompanist, you will assist with various classes, studios, auditions, and recitals. You will support the vocal ensembles as an accompanist, music director, arranger, transcriber, and music copyist. Responsibilities include providing support for admission events and preparing individual students for upcoming auditions or class showings. You will provide oversight and mentorship to student musical productions and rehearse or music direct at least one music theater project each year, acting as the primary accompanist and performance pianist. Among other duties, you will provide accompaniment, composition, and conducting for creation and performance collaborations, including production, recording, and editing. Additionally, you will prepare individual students or groups in the vocal ensembles for upcoming performances and recordings. Other departmental duties may be assigned by the chair.
The ideal candidate is an expert pianist with significant sight-reading and transposing skills. They have a clear understanding of vocal pedagogy and are familiar with a wide range of repertoire, including pop and music theater. The candidate can function as musical director on assigned productions or performances and is able to complete transcriptions and chart writing with the latest technologies.
Minimum qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in music
- At least five years of professional experience as a pianist, accompanist, music director, or composer
- Extensive professional experience preparing singers for performance
Preferred qualifications:
- Masters or doctoral degree in music performance
- A least five years of experience as a pianist, accompanist, music director, coach, or composer on Broadway, national tours, or for major collegiate/regional theaters
- Strong track record in musical theater accompanying, piano performance, musical direction, or coaching
- Experience with vocal instruction on the professional or collegiate level
- Leader in industry affiliations and professional network
Travel required:
- Less than 10%
Work hours: The university work week is Sunday through Saturday. Most offices are open Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. To accommodate business needs, employees may be assigned to other workdays and/or hours, including weekends and evenings.
