As the special project superintendent, you will work alongside designers and curators to bring the visionary events and exhibitions at SCAD to life.  SCAD is the elite art and design university, exemplifying innovation with every high-profile museum and gallery exhibition and signature event.  SCAD buildings reflect this same commitment to creativity, and the special projects superintendent is a critical team member contributing to interior specialty finishes, custom fabrications, unique interior decor elements, and installation of interior finishes and decor.

As the special project superintendent, you will serve as the department's primary point of contact and develop as well as implement and maintain project schedules. You will collaborate with other superintendents, project managers, and stakeholders to ensure efficient project progress and lead regular meetings to provide updates, assign tasks, and communicate safety guidelines. You'll also be responsible for fabrication functions such as finish carpentry, cabinet building, painting, faux finishing, mold making, furniture finishing, wood/metal stud framing with sheetrock, and other decorative work. You will also build exhibitions, exhibition elements, props, furniture, and other custom installations.

In this role, you will work with a wide range of building materials from wood and metal to plastics, concrete, foam board, paint/stain, and more. You'll create and follow directions or cut lists, reading design drawings and blueprints with attention to detail to produce exhibits and exhibit elements. You will ensure proper PPE use, complete assigned work order requests, and use the work order system to document problems requiring correction. Among other duties, you will complete major and minor building repairs; oversee the ordering, delivery, and inventory of materials, tools, and equipment; and maintain cost control by managing labor and materials efficiently to avoid waste.

In this position, you will be on call to handle emergencies as needed and advise your supervisor when emergencies occur or when assistance is needed. Responsibilities include the supervision of employees, contractors, and vendors; coordination with the physical resources team; and the assurance that all work is completed on time and within budget. You will also ensure every project adheres to SCAD policies and procedures, OSHA regulations and safe practices, and all local building codes.

The ideal candidate demonstrates a comprehensive knowledge of theatrical and exhibit construction, restoration, faux finishes, finish carpentry, drywall, and painting techniques, and best practices. They will have strong organizational, problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills. They can follow building plans, thrive in a fast-paced work environment, and collaborate effectively with others. The candidate must be safety-focused and professional at all times.
