As a higher education institution of learning, Washburn is heeding the call from the White House and Department of Education to place more university students in the community, particularly with K-12 programs the support youth education as tutors, mentors, student success coaches, and other student support roles. We have opportunities with both before/after school programming and directly in the schools.
These positions are open to any major as students engaged in this work learn skills that are generalizable to a wide variety of professions and settings. For example, it is an opportunity to increase skill sets such as leadership, communication, problem solving, teamwork, working with people different than yourself, project planning and implementation, relationship building, etc.

Essential Functions:
Job functions will vary based on the setting and focus you choose. That being said, there is an emphasis on academic support, mentoring and other supportive roles to increase youth success. All sites we work with are fairly flexible when it comes to determining days and hours worked and will work around your class schedule and other commitments within reason. All students must be willing to abide by the rules and policies of the organization/school they are working with and the Federal Work Study (FWS) program.
This position is only available to students who are eligible for FWS (for other types of paid community work through our department, please contact us at aleshirecenter@washburn.edu).
Non-Essential Functions:
Many of our community partners for these positions are not within walking distance, so having transportation is helpful but not required.
Students hired for community-based tutor/mentor positions have the opportunity to earn academic recognition for this work if they like.
Required Qualifications:
Must be enrolled at least half-time at Washburn University and be eligible for FWS.
None are necessarily required, but in rare cases there may be a requirement based on the level of the position within the organization.
All students hired must be able to pass a Washburn University and organizational background check.
