Position Summary: The Graduate Assistant (GA) in the Student Accessibility Office will assist in providing support and services to students with disabilities. The GA will assist with providing administrative and logistical support to help students with disabilities navigate our university. The GA will gain valuable experience in student services, disability advocacy, and higher education with honing their professional skills in a collaborative environment.
The Student Accessibility Office seeks to develop Career Readiness skills in student employees:
-Demonstrate initiative by taking on projects relate to accessibility initiatives. (Leadership and Professionalism)
-Maintain confidentiality and respect privacy when working with sensitive student information per FERPA and HIPPS guidelines. (Leadership and Professionalism)
-Effectively communicate with students, faculty, and staff regarding accommodation needs and processes. (Communication)
-Present accurate information in various methods of communication including phone, email, and in person. (Communication)
-Help organize awareness campaigns, workshops, and events to promote disability accessibility on campus. (Teamwork)
-Work closely with faculty and staff to enhance campus-wide accessibility practices. (Team work)
-Utilize accessibility software; Accommodate and assistive technology tools to support students in their academic success. (Technology)
-Update social media for office to include planned monthly informational celebrations of various disabilities. (Technology)
-Respect and engage with students from all backgrounds and with various disabilities. (Global and Intercultural Fluency)
Essential Functions:
Assist with Accommodation Coordination:
-Assist prospective students in understanding and applying for academic accommodations, such as extended test time or note-taking.
-Assist with proctoring of examinations with the Testing Center which includes monitoring and interactions with students and faculty via email and phone.
-Provide support for students related to their accommodations when appropriate.
-Documentation of various interactions to ensure student and faculty needs are addressed in a timely manner.
Student Support:
-Provide individualized assistance to students regarding academic accommodation, including note-taking services, extended time for exams, and alternative formats for coursework.
-Offer guidance on navigating campus resources and services available to students with disabilities.
Required Qualifications:
-Effective communication skills.
-Attention to detail.
-Knowledge and skills to effectively interact with all individuals.
-Experience with MS Office products (including but not limited to, Outlook, Powerpoint, Excel, and Teams).
Preferred Qualifications:
-Preference for current Washburn University Graduate student enrolled in a Social Work or Psychology at the university. Other graduate programs will still be considered, but related field is preferred.
-Experience working with individuals with physical, mental, or intellectual disabilities.
-Willingness to deliver exceptional customer service.
