Position Summary:

Washburn University Institute of Technology seeks applications for an Emergency Medical Technician Instructor to begin August 1, 2026. The Technical Instructor for EMT is responsible for working with the EMS program coordinator to ensure compliance with the Kansas Board of EMS regulations and Kansas statutes related to EMT training and certification. This is a 10-month, full-time, benefits-eligible day position with occasional evening responsibilities.

Essential Functions:
• The Technical Instructor position consists of four essential functions: teaching, service, collegiality, and professional development.
• Work with the EMS Program Coordinator to develop curriculum according to course competencies on each course syllabus, including didactic and practical competencies.
• Prepare for and attend all class meetings.
• Develop assignments for the classroom as well as for the lab/practicum.
• Enforce policies for safety and use of personal protective equipment for all individuals in the lab/shop environment.
• Maintain student records pertaining to the program (i.e. certification testing and the assessment plan).
• Administer tests, evaluate student work, provide feedback to students, and assign grades.
• Share (as appropriate) student information with the Student Services and Dean’s offices.
• Use the University’s Learning Management System (Desire 2 Learn or D2L) to keep track of grades as required.
• Evaluate each course one teaches and one’s own performance in teaching and maintain a positive learning environment.
• Participate in college-wide staff development days and departmental meetings.
• Participate actively in departmental/program advisory board meetings.
• Foster a positive relationship with industry and the community.
• Submit recommendations related to budgeting and purchases.
• Maintain and/or advance training in industry-recognized certifications and seek opportunities for professional development and/or advancement of educational degrees.
• Stay abreast of innovations and developments in the professional field.
• Take advantage of instructional support programs offered by the Center for Teaching Excellence and Learning (C-TEL).
• Act in a manner that promotes collegial relationships and shows respect toward students, staff, and colleagues.
• Meet satisfactory standards of performance in all areas of responsibility and to carry out those responsibilities accordingly.
• Adhere to college and University policies and to perform additional job-related duties as assigned or as appropriate.

Required Qualifications:
• Two years of experience as an EMT, AEMT, or Paramedic or equivalent EMS military experience.
• Current Kansas Certification as an Emergency Medical Technician or higher.
• Strong organizational and communication skills.
• Demonstrated dedication to developing inclusive teaching practices that engage all learners.
• Current Kansas Certification as an Emergency Medical Technician or higher. Current certificate as AHA BLS instructor or ability to obtain certification.
• Official certificates/educational transcripts required at time of hire.

Physical Requirements:
• Perform duties required to teach and demonstrate classroom and practical skills necessary for EMS course completion.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Teaching experience
• Associate Degree or higher in related field
• AHA BLS and ACLS Instructor Certification
