General Summary
The Assistant Controller for Accounting and Financial Reporting oversees the University's Accounting Operations and Financial Reporting units, is responsible for preparing all financial reports, and is the liaison with external and internal auditors.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Provide support and direction to the Accounting Operations and Financial Reporting units, as well as associated staff.
Provide oversight to the annual external audit process and the compilation of the University's financial statements.
Ensure proper and consistent financial accounting methodology, techniques, and policies are adopted by the University and used in operations.
Develop and communicate relevant changes to University accounting policies and procedures to the University community.
Analyze, review and accumulate data for reports, interpret and recommend outcomes and prepare projections for future periods.
Develop reports of complex financial data and metrics for management.
Execute internal control programs established by management, research new regulations, and recommend and implement approved changes.
Lead, communicate, and contribute to unit and organization strategy; assist in the development of change management plans and provide support for delivery and materials update, as needed.
Engage in continuous critical analysis of existing systems and processes, and make recommendations to achieve greater efficiency and improve internal controls.
Represent the Accounting Operations and Reporting department to departmental group(s); serve as subject matter expert on matters that involve complex technical, financial or regulatory requirements.
Assess client and business needs, formulate recommendations to determine approach to managing and completing processes.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
A Bachelor's degree in accounting or related field is required.
Knowledge of business applications such as Excel, Access, and Crystal is necessary.
Five years' professional experience in accounting is required.
Knowledge of GAAP is required.
Demonstrated leadership skills in planning and directing employees and processes in order to effectively implement quality improvement initiatives is required.
Excellent written, and oral communication skills is required.
Demonstrated Professionalism, integrity, responsibility, and self-motivation is required.
Demonstrated ability to be flexible in managing a workload of varied tasks is required.
Proven ability to work independently under pressure and with minimal supervision is required.
Good organizational skills is required.
Proven ability as a team leader and to work collaboratively on teams is required.
Proficiency with personal computers is necessary.
Preferred Qualifications:
Previous supervisory experience is preferred.
A CPA is a preferred.
Knowledge of GASB is highly desirable.
Knowledge of Ellucian's banner ERP system is a plus.
