A Legacy of Care

Calvary Ryde began in the 1890s when The Honourable Thomas Dalton donated land and funded a villa to care for women with mental health needs. With the support of Cardinal Moran and the Little Company of Mary Sisters, the facility opened in 1892 and became known as Mt St Margaret’s, in memory of Mr Dalton’s wife and in honour of St Margaret of Scotland.

Over the years, the site grew to include a chapel, convent, and nursing school. In 1991, the hospital closed, and the retirement community we know today took shape. Dalton House, the original building, still stands at the heart of the campus.

By volunteering at Calvary Ryde, you’re becoming part of a legacy built on compassion and service—a tradition over 130 years strong. Your presence, time, and kindness can brighten lives and create meaningful connections for our residents and their families.
