The Director of Emergency Medicine is responsible for delivering a high‑performing, safe, and effective Emergency Department service. The role oversees the overall coordination, performance, and clinical governance of the department, ensuring that standards of practice are consistently monitored and maintained. A key priority is fostering a safe environment for both patients and staff.

In addition, the Director leads and implements change initiatives to drive continuous improvement and achieve agreed clinical and operational outcomes within the service.

The Directorship is appointed for a fixed term of five (5) years, aligned with a quinquennial review period.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide medical leadership and strategic direction for Emergency Department services, including planning, operations, and evaluation, including mentoring and supervising junior medical officers.
  • Contribute to education, training, and ongoing staff development, including postgraduate Emergency Medicine training.
  • Deliver high-quality, evidence-based clinical services within budget and performance benchmarks.
  • Promote clinical research, patient safety, quality improvement, and compliance with relevant standards and legislation.
  • Support strategic planning and service sustainability within the Emergency Department.
  • Foster a positive, values-driven workplace culture, including cultural respect aligned with Closing the Gap initiatives.

 

About You:

  • A primary medical degree registrable by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and Fellowship of Australasian College of Emergency Medicine (FACEM)
  • Extensive clinical experience in Emergency Medicine within the public/private hospital field, with a strong understanding of clinical governance, quality, safety, and evidence-based best practice.
  • Proven leadership capability with the ability to improve service delivery, implement effective workplace systems, and foster positive organisational culture through strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to education, research, and professional representation, including undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, participation in clinical research, and effective engagement in public and internal forums.
