The opportunity

The position is accountable for ensuring the safety and health of personnel through the delivery of professional health and safety advice, support, promotion and implementation of the PLS Safety Management System. The role requires collaboration with various stakeholders to implement WHS programs and improvement initiatives with a strong focus on fatality prevention (Critical Risk Management) and injury reduction.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide health and safety advice, assistance, guidance, coaching and support to site leaders and workers to enhance their risk management capability and decision-making (in relation to WHS hazards, risks, controls and outcomes).
  • Apply health and safety practices and initiatives that support business implementation to achieve WHS objectives, targets and improvement outcomes and ensure compliance with all relevant WHS legislative obligations.
  • Promote and proactively utilise the PLS Safety Management System and contribute to reviews, updates and improvements as required.
  • Undertake tasks as set out in the CRM implementation plan, including conducting CRM training, facilitate CRM task-based risk assessments and conduct risk assessments/reviews to identify risks, critical controls and produce relevant documents including procedures, plans and checklists.
  • Undertake field interactions (FIs), planned task observations (PTOs) and coaching to enhance capability for workers, Operators, Supervisors and Managers (relating to task-based and critical control verifications (CCVs), Forwood verifications/reviews, Take 5, Job Hazard Analysis, Safe Work Method Statements and inspections).
  • Developing risk-focused WHS documentation, training personnel, conducting field assurance and embedding a proactive risk culture.
  • Recommend key control methods (considering the hierarchy of control) for health and safety risk reduction and evaluate control effectiveness.
  • Undertake and assist in incident/injury investigations, ensuring investigations are conducted at sufficient quality and depth (to better understand the event and enable identification of contributing factors) that inform recommendations and lessons learned that will either prevent recurrence, or reduce likelihood or severity of the outcome (in the event that it does recur).
  • Undertake, assist and participate in various health and safety tasks including risk assessment workshops, audits, inspections, verifications, register development, monitoring programs, data gathering, reviews and document writing/updates.
  • Contribute to the review and development of Principal Mining Hazards Management Plans
  • Utilise various digital applications and systems, such as (but not limited to) INX InControl, Forwood Safety (CRM), Microsoft Office suite, Sharepoint, Cority, MyPass, ChemAlert and PowerBI.
  • Conduct health and safety first-line assurance and governance activities.
  • Provide active field health and safety support during various work activities and stages.
  • Attend and actively participate in various meetings such as Prestart and Information (PSI), Health and Safety Representatives (HSRs), Health and Safety committee, Toolbox and Team/Management meetings.
  • Prepare data to enable reporting on health and safety performance for daily, weekly, monthly meetings/reporting including, but not limited to, CRM performance and Forwood system data for feedback of trends, insights and lessons learned with relevant leaders.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of Health, Safety and Security Strategic Plan, Annual work plans and improvement initiatives.
  • Undertake tasks and complete activities as defined in the Plan on a Page (POAP), Health and Safety Activity Schedule and team task tracker.
  • Review INX events and provide feedback and support to develop capability of frontline leaders.
  • Assist in applying and reviewing risk management processes effectively and consistently.
  • Support the delivery of key health and safety training programs including updating awareness material.
  • Contribute to the standardisation and simplification of health and safety systems and processes.
  • Any other duties or tasks as assigned by the Principal Advisor - Critical Risk, Site H&S Superintendent, Health and Safety Manager or Head of HSS.

About you

  • WA C-class Motor Driver’s Licence.
  • Certificate IV Workplace Health & Safety.
  • Certification in Incident Investigation (ICAM certification and Essential Factors preferred).
  • Strong commitment to health, safety and the environment.
  • Minimum 5 years’ health and safety experience in operational mining/resources, high-risk or heavy industry.
  • Experience in Safety Management Systems, Critical Risk Management, Fatality Prevention and WHS risk assessment facilitation.
  • Experience in field safety support ensuring the safe delivery of mine site operational, maintenance and plant related work/teams.
  • Ability to work independently whilst collaborating effectively within a cross-functional team.
  • Ability to influence and effectively engage with stakeholders at all levels on site.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of statutory health and safety requirements.
