Structural Engineer
Job no: 493052
Work type: Full time
Location: Various locations
Categories: Engineering
About the role
We have an exciting opportunity for an early career Bridge Engineer to join our team. You will contribute to making the heavy vehicle industry safer, resulting in fewer road deaths and injuries. You will do this by working with local councils to help them determine the capabilities of their bridges and culverts, leading to opportunities for modern, safer and more productive vehicles to access more of the road network.
You will undertake reviews of bridge assessments performed by contracted parties and contribute to systems to automate heavy vehicle access decisions by local road managers. This role will also support the development of guidance and training materials for road managers and asset assessors. You will have excellent professional support, working under the guidance of the NHVR’s Chief Structural Engineer.
This is a permanent full-time role (alternatives to full-time will be considered) and you will be part of a close, tight-knit and high-performance team. On offer is a flexible, supportive and inclusive work environment where the work you produce plays an important part in making Australia’s freight network and supply chains safer and more efficient.
About You
You will have experience in a similar position and will be versed in bridge assessment or infrastructure design engineering and associated standards and legislation.
Motivated to contribute to outcomes, you will be a creative and logical thinker, who thrives on solving technical problems through collaboration. You will have the ability to work independently and contribute effectively in a supportive team environment whilst maintaining a high level of work ethic. The role has a lot of projects on the go at any one point in time, and requires high level problem-solving, creativity, perseverance, as well as solid planning and prioritisation skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential. You will need to be able to build rapport and develop strong stakeholder relationships across multiple sources, taking end-to-end responsibility for a body of work.
You will need to leverage these relationships to seek the appropriate advice and information required to inform your decisions, as well as negotiate outcomes and overcome challenges.
Previous exposure to AS5100 (Bridge Design) and grillage modelling of bridge structures is essential, ideally using Space Gass. Experience in programming is also desirable.
A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering is mandatory, along with around 2 – 5 years engineering experience, including direct experience in bridge assessment and/or bridge design.
