We’re looking for a safety-focused leader to drive a new, strategically important Systems Assessment program. As Manager, Systems Assessment, you’ll lead a national field based team conducting in-depth safety system assessments across the heavy vehicle supply chain. This position can be based in Brisbane, Melbourne or Parramatta. 

 

About the role

This is a newly created leadership role, responsible for building and leading a field-based team of Systems Assessment Officers and Senior Officers who deliver risk-based assessments, provide expert input into investigations, and contribute to NHVR’s national safety agenda.

You’ll work closely with NHVR’s Investigations and Compliance& Major Investigations teams to assess the effectiveness of Safety Management Systems (SMS) used by operators and off-road parties. Your team will be central to detecting risks, identifying safety failures, issuing improvement and prohibition notices, and influencing national safety outcomes.

Key responsibilities of this role are:

  • Design and deliver a national field Systems Assessment Program in line with risk intelligence
  • Lead a geographically dispersed team, providing mentoring, development and direction
  • Coordinate targeted safety assessments across jurisdictions and industries
  • Ensure inspections and assessments align with HVNL safety obligations and regulatory controls
  • Provide strategic input to support investigations and broader compliance efforts
  • Collaborate with technical and legal teams to address systemic safety risks
  • Promote continuous improvement in SMS assurance, field assessments, and compliance tools
  • Maintain a high-performing team culture aligned to NHVR’s values and regulatory approach

 

 About You

  • Proven experience in field-based SMS assessments or safety assurance
  • Strong leadership skills, with experience managing dispersed and technical teams
  • Knowledge of regulatory risk controls, SMS frameworks and WHS legislation
  • Ability to translate safety assessment findings into actionable outcomes
  • Excellent communication, stakeholder engagement and negotiation skills
  • Experience delivering complex operational programs in regulated environments
  • High level of initiative, sound judgement and ethical regulatory decision-making
