Job Duties

The Financial Aid Counselor reporting to the Associate Director of Client Services serves as the student’s primary contact for the Financial Aid office.

The incumbent will:

  • Work with newly admitted students and families as well as current students to help them navigate the financial aid process, and to ensure they understand their federal and state aid, and merit scholarships.
  • Counsel and advise students about financial aid eligibility, application procedures, aid programs, costs, and indebtedness.
  • Counsel students regarding budgeting, loan management, satisfactory academic process, and other special circumstances.
  • Collect and analyze files to make informed decisions for professional judgment and satisfactory academic progress (SAP).
  • Ensure compliance with all financial aid policies, procedures, and regulations when reviewing financial aid applications.
  • Exercise judgment when interpreting federal and state regulations for student situations.
  • Participate in presentations and workshops on financial aid-related issues.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to learn and use an automated financial aid system.
  • Ability to make independent decisions and sound judgement.
  • Knowledge of federal financial aid and state regulations and requirements. Ability to apply knowledge, interpret and make decisions regarding regulations.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment, with a high degree of courtesy, timeliness, and structure.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, patience, and commitment to customer service.
  • Must be able to communicate sensitive and/or complex information in a confidential and straightforward manner.
  • Proficient user of Microsoft Office and experienced in financial database systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage multiple administrative tasks with minimal oversight.
  • Must be a creative problem solver; possess a high level of accuracy, self-motivation, strong attention to detail.
  • Must have excellent organizational skills with the ability to organize and prioritize multiple complex projects and tasks simultaneously.
  • Must have demonstrated service aptitude and ability to work independently.
  • Knowledge of Federal Title IV awards and regulations including FERPA.
  • 4 years of financial aid or academic counseling experience
  • Customer service experience
  • Extensive knowledge of federal, state, and institutional financial aid programs
  • Ability to interpret, assess, and apply federal, state, and institutional policies and procedures.

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Colleague-Ellucian Software
  • Ellucian Student Forms
  • Experience with federal processing systems (COD, NSLDS, FAAccess to CPS)
