About this Position

The Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind is seeking a Vehicle Driver to transport students to and from their homes across the state of Virginia.


This is a wage position without benefits and limited to 1500 hours per year. Normal transportation hours occur on Sundays and Fridays, however, subject to change based on special events and holidays. A typical route is between 5 to 10 hours. If you work both routes per week, the expectation is 10 – 20 hours depending on route assignment within the state.

Job Duties

• Assure safe transportation of students. (Another full-time staff member will be in the vehicle, van, or activity bus with students.)
• Perform pre-trip inspection to assure safe operation
• Assist in cleaning vehicle in between daily trips
• Maintain documentation regarding vehicle usage and maintenance
• Sufficient knowledge of state driving laws and the use of GPS or road maps to transport children in a safe and timely manner
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds (student luggage)
• Perform repetitive motion to include standing, sitting, reaching, lifting, walking, bending, and climbing

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma, General Education Development (GED) certificate or equivalent amount of training and experience.
• Valid Driver’s License with a driving record that reflects a sense of responsibility for highway and passenger safety
• Working knowledge of the safe operation of cars and vans, and associated safety practices

Preferred Qualifications: Prior experience as a professional driver
