Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Health, Portsmouth District is seeking a Certified Nurse Practitioner to join the team. The incumbent of this position would be responsible for performing patient care as a nurse practitioner with ready on-site access to a physician for guidance and oversight. Performs physical examinations, orders diagnostic tests, prescribes controlled substances, may directly perform or direct others to perform nursing assessments, may perform lab tests, take measurements, develop and implement care plans, including the administration of medication and case management.

Actions performed at this level require licensure as a Certified Nurse Practitioner by state code.

VDH requires all Health-Care Personnel (HCP) to provide documentation of immunization or evidence of immunity to the following: hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella; a one-time dose of tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap) vaccine regardless of the interval since the last dose of tetanus-diphtheria (Td) vaccine was administered (Td or Tdap boosters shall be received every 10 years); and the current year's seasonal influenza vaccination.

Minimum Qualifications

• Knowledge of clinical medicine and clinical skills in pediatrics, family planning, gynecological services, STI and adult health services
• Knowledge of nursing, physical examination techniques and findings, both normal and pathological, disease states, diagnostic testing and limits of testing, and pharmacology
• Skills in interviewing, counseling, effective written and verbal communication
• Ability to perform and interpret physical assessments, obtain medical history, perform and/or interpret diagnostic testing, formulate differential diagnoses and plan of care and provide health education to clients
• Ability to work independently; ability to problem solve and to work effectively with others in a team environment

Additional Considerations

• Prior public health or community health experience
• Current CPR/BLS certification
