Job Duties
This attorney, based on the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, will serve the Attorney General under the direction of the Chief of the Education Section and the VCU University Counsel, and will serve the university by providing legal advice and representation to university leadership, administration, faculty and employees on a wide variety of legal matters impacting higher education in addition to other advising duties as assigned. VCU is Virginia’s largest urban research university, with approximately 30,000 students and fourteen colleges and schools located on two campuses, closely associated with the VCU Health System Authority.
Minimum Qualifications
- It is anticipated that the attorney will handle a broad range of legal matters, serving all divisions of the University, in coordination with the other attorneys in the Office of the University Counsel.
- Areas of emphasis include Title IX compliance and other matters, as well as general litigation and litigation management, student matters and governance.
- The position may also assist, as needed, in the areas of contract, sponsored research, non-disclosure agreements, and University-Associated Organizations.
- Additionally, the individual will provide other legal services to the University and the Commonwealth as directed by the Office of the Attorney General and the University Counsel.
- A minimum of five years of experience in the general practice of law is required.
- Excellent interpersonal skills are also required. High level organizational skills and an ability to manage many projects simultaneously and work under pressure are required.
- Successful candidate will have excellent analytical abilities and written and oral communication skills and be able to respond to legal requests in a timely fashion.
Additional Considerations
Preference will be given to applicants with specific experience in the representation higher education institutions.
