Job Duties

The attorney, based in the Virginia Community College System Office in Richmond, Virginia, will serve the Attorney General under the direction of the Chief of the Higher Education Section and will provide representation and a variety of legal services to the System. The System is comprised of 23 community colleges on 40 campuses, a System Office, and a Shared Services Center.

It is anticipated that the attorney will handle a broad range of legal matters, serving all divisions of the System. Serving as agency counsel requires advising decision-makers throughout the organization on the legal risks and obligations associated with their duties as employees or board members and offering strategies for mitigating legal risk in unexpected circumstances and situations. System Counsel supervises three attorneys serving the System. System Counsel may also represent the System in state or federal court, before regulatory bodies, and with third parties in pre-litigation and transactional matters. Additionally, this individual will provide other legal services to the Commonwealth as directed by the Office of the Attorney General.

Minimum Qualifications

  • The successful candidate will have excellent analytical abilities and written and oral communication skills and be able to respond to legal requests in a timely fashion.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills are also required.
  • High level organizational skills and an ability to manage many projects simultaneously and work under pressure are required.
  • Admission to the Virginia Bar is required before beginning employment.

Additional Considerations

Preference will be given to applicants with experience in the representation public institutions of higher education.
