Job Duties

We are seeking individuals interested in joining our Salem District Structure & Bridge Team working on one of our Bridge Crews in Bedford, Christiansburg, Ironto, Hillsville, Martinsville and Salem locations. We are looking for individuals with skills in carpentry, concrete forming and finishing, welding, and equipment operation (e.g. dump truck, loader, backhoe) and ability to perform manual labor.

As a member of the bridge maintenance team, you will:
• Place temporary bridges and remove damaged structures. Prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal or other types of emergency operations. Clear roadways of snow, ice and debris, and clean up after accidents. Provide traffic control.
• Operate light to medium-duty equipment to perform bridge maintenance and construction related tasks
• Form footers, abutments, wing walls, and place and finish concrete
• Erect steel beam structures, install timber and concrete bridge decks
• Complete pre-trip inspections, demonstrate proper jobsite protection techniques

Position requires physically demanding labor over, in, and around water from boats and scaffolding at various heights and in harsh weather conditions.

VDOT is an emergency response agency and this position is key to fulfilling this agency requirement, and this position will be called upon to work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations such as inclement weather, flooding, and/or traffic incidents.

Minimum Qualifications

• Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
• Knowledge of highway and bridge maintenance methods, equipment, materials and safety practices.
• Skill in the operation and use of light and medium-duty equipment, as well as in the use of hand and power tools.
• Ability to perform mathematical calculations to measure and lay out constructed elements on bridges and culverts.
• Safety shoes required.
• Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.
• Ability to perform minor repairs and preventive maintenance on equipment and tools.
• Skill in carpentry, concrete forming and finishing, and welding.
• Ability to work at heights, over and, or in water, in heavy traffic and under other adverse conditions.

Additional Considerations

• Experience in carpentry, building forms and false works, and concrete placement and finishing.
• Experience with light to medium-duty equipment and hand and power tools.
• Experience in bridge maintenance or construction.
• Valid Certified Crane Operator with appropriate endorsements.
• A combination of training, experience, or education in Construction or related field desired.
• Experience fabricating or welding steel components.
• Valid Commercial Drivers License with appropriate endorsements.

This position is designated as essential and, as such, all duties associated with this job are required during emergency situations which may include, but are not limited to,
inclement weather, disaster response and emergency operations. Performance of these duties may require work outside of normal business hours including nights, weekends and holidays. VDOT will determine when essential positions are required to report.

Multiple Operator Structure & Bridge positions may be filled from this recruitment in Bedford, Christiansburg, Ironto, Hillsville, Martinsville and Salem Bridge.

VDOT utilizes a market based pay program, which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.
