Job Duties
Adult Education Teachers are responsible for providing quality instruction that meets the needs of the student in the areas of Adult Basic Education (ABE) and General Educational Diploma (GED) and that enables incarcerated youth and adults to become responsible, productive, tax-paying members of their community. Additionally, position is required to meet the standards defined under the Commonwealth’s statutes and program certification requirements. Position provides individual and group instruction to adult student inmates. Successful candidate will maintain classroom, equipment, and inventories; ensure compliance with all DOC regulations; maintain accurate records and submit timely reports; and manage and supervise aides and students in a classroom setting.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree from accredited college or university in a relevant educational field, preferably a major or minor in high school math, science or other relevant subject.
Experience teaching adults and or youth and knowledge and experience of policy and procedure governing adult education is required.
Must possess a Collegiate Professional or Postgraduate Professional Teaching License from the Virginia Department of Education or qualify for reciprocity from another state and without deficiencies. Experience teaching adults and or youth is required.

Demonstrated ability to facilitate other instructors. The demonstrated ability to engage students in one-on-one teaching of all the five subjects and supervise students and aides in a classroom setting; the ability to maintain accurate records. Must possess working knowledge of all facets of the basic adult education field, adult literacy and computer software appropriate for program needs. Demonstrated competency in the relevant field of current licensure.
Additional Considerations
Master’s degree with a major or minor in a relevant educational field. Prefer experience teaching adults and or youth in a correctional or alternative education setting. Prefer knowledge and experience of policy and procedures governing adult correctional education. Knowledge of correctional education classroom management. The ability to supervise students and inmate aides in the correctional facility; knowledge of the Department of Corrections (DOC) institutional policies and procedures.
