Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is excited to offer and announce an opportunity to serve as a Senior Transportation Planning Specialist in the Transportation Mobility and Planning Division in the agency’s Central Office. The selected candidate will support the Strategically Targeted Affordable Roadway Solutions (STARS) program with technical assistance.

Position specific responsibilities and duties will include, but are not limited to:

• Support Strategically Targeted Affordable Roadway Solutions (STARS) program.
• Conduct and review traffic forecasting and analysis.
• Develop/test alternatives to address study needs.
• Conduct and review planning/operational studies.

Minimum Qualifications

• Demonstrated ability to apply transportation planning and traffic engineering principles and practices to a variety of complex projects.
• Ability to evaluate and develop innovative solutions for transportation planning and mobility initiatives.
• Ability to organize and analyze transportation data and data visualization tool.
• Experience using planning and traffic engineering software.
• Experience in long-range transportation planning to include forecasting, transportation studies and traffic analyses.
• Ability to work with diverse groups, including technical staff, elected officials and citizens.
• Proven ability to communicate effectively orally and in wiring with diverse audience.
• Experience in conducting and reviewing transportation planning and traffic engineering studies.
• Experience in using ArcGIS, spreadsheets/database and mapping tools.

Additional Considerations

• Progressively responsible experience in transportation planning/traffic engineering.
• Experience working with multi-disciplinary teams and other transportation planning professionals on a wide range of transportation-related issues.
• Profession Engineer (P.E.) license or American Institute of Certified Planner (AICP) certificate
• A combination of training, experience, or education in Transportation Planning, Civil Engineering, Urban Planning or related field
• Experience in using planning and traffic engineering software such as HCS, Synchro, SIDRA, VISSIM, and TransCAD.
• Experience in using big data analytic tools such as STREETLIGHT Data, INRIX.

VDOT is an emergency operation agency. Positions physically working within Central Office locations may be designated upon request and coordination among the respective District Engineer or Administrator and Chief. Assignments are updated annually. Not all designated employees are provided an emergency operations assignment.
