Job Duties

Virginia Department of Education (VDOE); Division of Early Childhood Care and Education, Office of Child Care Health and Safety, is seeking a qualified and experienced professional to serve as a Licensing Inspector for the Fairfax region.

The Licensing Inspector is responsible for reducing risks to children in child care facilities through the promotion and support of improved quality of care and enforcement of state licensing laws, regulations, and evaluation of standards of practices. This position monitors and provides regulatory oversight by evaluating applicants, conducting inspections, and investigating reports of alleged noncompliance and alleged illegal operations.

Localities overseen by the Fairfax region include the counties of Arlington, Loudoun, and Fairfax, and the cities of Alexandria, Annandale, Fairfax, Falls Church, Leesburg, Herndon, and Vienna.

Minimum Qualifications

• Knowledge of developmental, social, emotional, health/medical needs of children served in regulated programs.
• Skill in working effectively within difficult and hostile environments to resolve problems.
• Ability to interpret and apply laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.
• Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations, both orally and in writing, and work collaboratively and cooperatively with others.
• Ability to operate basic office computer systems/programs.
• Knowledge of information and evidence collection and analysis techniques.

Additional Considerations

• Demonstrated knowledge in the area of human services, public administration, child development, human development, or related practice field is preferred or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
• Experience preparing for or conducting facility licensing inspections.
• Education or equivalent experience as a program director in child care.
