Looking for meaningful employment? This position will allow you to assist staff who are blind, or vision impaired in providing services to individuals in the community in order to help them maintain their desired levels of independence.

The driver will not only provide transportation for staff who are blind or vision impaired but will also assist with ‘visual’ tasks such as completing handwritten forms, observing the home environments and providing feedback to staff, and serving as a sighted guide. Job Duties:

The Department for the Blind and Vision Impaired (DBVI) organizational objective is to enable individuals who are blind, deafblind, or vision impaired to achieve their desired level of employment, education, and independence.

We are seeking a Driver (Wage). This position requires driving passenger vehicles to include but not limited to sedans, SUVS and multi-passenger vans. Responsible for the safe transport of all consumers, staff, or other goods/materials. Driving in both urban and rural areas of our coverage territory; in both daylight and nighttime hours in all weather conditions. Driving may be for short distances and/or all-day trips. The vehicle driven may change frequently.

Locates addresses. Using Global Positioning System, navigational system, smartphone technology, written directions or road maps, navigates passenger to required locations in meeting the client’s needs. Addresses to be located are in both urban and rural areas. Some consumer homes are in remote areas.

This is a wage (part-time) position and will work on average of 29 hours a week and can’t exceed 1500 hours during their employment year. This position does not include health insurance, retirement or leave.

Minimum Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have:

Knowledge/Experience -

  • Must have valid Virginia driver’s license.
  • Driver’s license must be free of points for moving offences. No recent history of major driving offences such as DUI or reckless driving. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge to be able to locate addresses over a large geographical area, both urban and rural, using road maps, GPS, smartphone, internet and written directions.

Ability/Skills:

  • Demonstrated skills in safely operating passenger vehicles including sedans, SUVs, and multi-passenger vans. (Must be capable of driving for multiple hours on all types of roads and highways, including interstate highways, in all types of weather and lighting conditions).
  • Demonstrated ability to provide detailed information to staff regarding environmental conditions at the consumer’s home, place of work/training, and other environments encountered while performing duties; and to effectively communicate both written and verbally.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize, prioritize and plan work; demonstrated skills using standard office equipment such as fax machine and copier; and to work well with diverse customer base, office, and agency groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to complete all assigned duties in supporting agency operations and embrace flexibility in completing any/all assigned work.
  • Must have the ability to maintain confidentiality of personally identifiable information and other confidential information regarding agency consumers and agency staff.
  • Fuels vehicles, assists in vehicle maintenance and cleaning scheduling and provides fuel receipts and mileage log for state car record keeping. May assist agency staff, clients, and contractors in loading materials in/out of office & vehicle. Assist with inclement weather events, closures, and emergency situations as assigned.
  • Completes initial/on-going training and other duties as assigned. Completes mandatory training as specified by the agency, department, and the Department for Human Resources Management.
