Job Duties

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) seeks an enthusiastic and creative Education Event & Program Technician to join our Art & Education Department.

This position plays a vital role in supporting the delivery of exceptional in-person and virtual educational programs and events. You'll work collaboratively with museum staff, volunteers, and the community to ensure events run smoothly and foster a welcoming atmosphere for all visitors.

This is a non-exempt position without benefits, eligible to work up to approximately 28 hours per week on average and up to 1,450 hours annually (May 1 – April 30).

Responsibilities:
• Provide technical and operational support for a variety of educational programs and events, including Family Days, community festivals, Teen Programs, Adult Programs, and virtual events.
• Oversee volunteers and assist with day-to-day program activities.
• Facilitate art activities, coordinate performers or artists, and introduce presentations during virtual and off-site programs.
• Attend and participate in a minimum of five Family Day, Education, community outreach, or Teen events per year.
• Prepare and set up educational materials, art supplies, and event equipment.
• Maintain familiarity with museum rules and studio safety procedures

Minimum Qualifications

• Familiarity with VMFA's exhibitions, collections, and educational programs is a plus.
• Excellent customer service skills and experience working with the public.
• Ability to multitask and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to take direction and work independently.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Experience working with a variety of art supplies and materials preferred.
• Experience leading art projects and engaging with large groups is a plus.
• (Preferred) Experience working with museum programs, events, or educational settings.
• Ability to lift and carry up to 25lbs.

Schedule Requirements:
Mandatory: Work at ChinaFest, the museum's largest Family Day event, which takes place in February of each year.

• Strongly Encouraged: Work at ALL Family Day events throughout the year.


Specific dates for Family Day events will be provided 3-4 months in advance.

Event Commitment: Work a minimum of five Family Day, Education, community outreach, or Teen events per year, averaging 2-9 hours per event and to attend required orientations and meetings scheduled prior to each event.

Additional Considerations

• High School Diploma or GED. Bachelor's degree or an equivalent amount of experience in a related field preferred.
• Experience working within different art programs, classes, or event settings.
• Experience working with the public and teens preferred.
• Experience working with stage and/or audio-visual equipment.
