Job Duties

This position is with the Department of Corrections’ Corrections Construction Unit and the main administrative office is based in Powhatan, Virginia. Position actively participates in the productive, effective, and cost-efficient delivery of programs and services which support and enhance field operations to achieve the goals, mission, and vision of the Department. The Corrections Construction Superintendent performs duties statewide on VADOC commercial construction building sites alongside assigned construction workers and coordinates the daily jobsite activities, to include but not limited to:
Exercises sound ethical judgment, identifies, coordinates, and uses resources appropriately, anticipating, and pro-actively resolving conflicts, delivering the project in accordance with plans, specifications, budget, and schedule. Coordinates the daily activities of a variety of trade skilled and unskilled inmate labor workforce and is authorized to terminate, layoff or remove, assigned inmate workers for cause or during times of work slowdown.

Minimum Qualifications

High School diploma or equivalent. Valid State Issued Driver’s License. Primarily skilled in Construction Trade; HVAC in Commercial Applications. Experience in at least two commercial construction trades. Experience in supervision and instruction of a minimal-skilled workforce in the commercial construction arena. Experience in managing construction project schedules with minimum direct supervision. Experience interpreting and building according to construction drawings, code, specifications, and other documents. Knowledge in the multiple construction trades means, methods and materials used in the installation and repair of commercial/institutional building structures. Knowledge of the regulations of the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code (VUSBC) as it applies to commercial construction. Knowledge of Construction safety OSHA standards, environmental and conservation requirements. Skilled in English language verbal and written to assure courteous and effective communications. Skilled in the operations of the variety of construction, trade related, powered and hand tools and machines. Skilled in maintaining records for site personnel such as daily reports, field orders and time keeping reports. Ability to be proactive, to work successfully with limited supervision and within a team environment. Ability to work with your hands, to climb ladders to heights to 40 feet and to lift a minimum of 50 pounds. Ability to work and stand on a regular basis, outdoors, in extreme hot and cold weather working conditions. Ability to independently travel statewide with frequent overnight stay in the performance of duties.

Additional Considerations

Current DPOR HVAC construction trades licensure. EPA 608 refrigerant certification. Experience in the operations of construction earthmoving equipment. Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with minimum Class “B” classification.
