The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is responsible for building, maintaining, and operating the state’s roads, bridges, tunnels, and ferries. The Salem District maintains more than 9,200 miles of roads in southwestern Virginia in the counties of:

As a Maintenance Supervisor, you will: Assist the Superintendent in assessing needs and planning, scheduling, assigning, and evaluating roadway /roadside maintenance work; Prioritize and execute residency work orders and inspect potential problem areas in the field; Update work order system; Monitor expenditures; estimate materials, labor, and cost, and order supplies; Supervise maintenance and contract crews during normal and emergency operations; Lead safety meetings and train staff on safety methods and protocols; Investigate customer inquiries and identify solutions; Maintain work accomplishment records and project documentation; Coordinate and direct emergency operations to include inclement weather and disaster response after hours, on weekends and holidays as required.
Day to day duties include supervision of the AHQ work crews while performing diverse roadway/roadside maintenance activities and equipment operation. Position will help develop schedules, budgets, and work priorities. Will assist with management of the area’s emergency operations and safety programs to include work zone traffic controls and set-up; Will develop and monitor individual training programs. Will conduct performance evaluations; monitor inventory levels, and complete paperwork and reports; and investigate/respond to customer concerns and issues. Will also operate equipment and perform heavy manual labor as a working supervisor.
This position’s physical requirements include the ability to lift up to 50 lbs frequently, standing, walking and sitting frequently, climbing ladders, maneuvering on uneven terrain, stooping, crawling, kneeling, bending, pushing and pulling occasionally.
VDOT is an emergency response agency and this position is key to fulfilling this agency requirement, and this position will be called upon to work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations such as inclement weather, flooding, and/or traffic incidents.
Minimum Qualifications
•Considerable knowledge of roadway/ roadside maintenance materials, methods and procedures.
•Ability to supervise, train, document counseling sessions, and evaluate personnel; plan work schedules and identify and assign manpower, materials and equipment needed to accomplish the job and read/interpret road and bridge plan sand sketches.
•Knowledge of inventory practices.
•Knowledge of safety policies, procedures and programs.
•Ability to prepare administrative paperwork and reports.
•Possess basic PC skills.
•Ability to communicate effectively and interact successfully with co-workers, managers and customers.
•Considerable skill in the operation and maintenance of hand-held and power tools used for highway maintenance and repair.
•Ability to perform manual labor.
•Ability to obtain valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter
•Valid driver's license required
Additional Considerations
•Experience leading the work of and training others in diverse/ complex highway maintenance operations and techniques; includes recent experience performing heavy manual labor;
•Experience leading emergency operations such as snow removal, storm damage and accident clean up;
•Experience supervising and evaluating personnel;
•Experience using computers to maintain inventory records, work order records, analyze data, and prepare schedules and reports;
•DCR Erosion and Sediment Control certification.

This position is designated as essential and, as such, all duties associated with this job are required during emergency situations which may include, but are not limited to, inclement weather, disaster response and emergency operations.
Performance of these duties may require work outside of normal business hours including nights, weekends and holidays. VDOT will determine when essential positions are required to report.

VDOT utilizes a market based pay program, which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.
