Job Duties
Central State Hospital (CSH) is a 277 bed Joint Commission accredited psychiatric inpatient facility located in Petersburg, Virginia. CSH has proudly been serving citizens of the Commonwealth since 1870, when we opened our doors as the first psychiatric hospital in the country dedicated to the treatment of African Americans. A new and modern CSH is currently under construction on the same property, with a scheduled completion date of 2027.
CSH maintains the only maximum-security treatment facility in the state (111 beds). We also have 166 beds available for individuals in the community who need inpatient care, as well as individuals in the criminal justice system. We believe that treatment should be holistic and focused on the person’s individual needs, recognizing that recovery is not linear or the same for every person. Treatment modalities may include medication, evidence-based group and individual therapy, peer support, psychosocial rehabilitation, vocational training, preparation for court, and treatment for substance use.
Central State Hospital is currently recruiting a Part-Time Substance Abuse Counselor to join our Psychology department. The Substance Abuse Counselor will facilitate evidenced-based and recovery-oriented individual and group substance use services with adults with serious mental illness at Central State Hospital in both maximum security and civil units. The Part-Time Substance Abuse Counselor is to complete assessments and screenings of clients to determine presence or severity of substance use disorders. The role will document on clients' attendance and progress according to hospital and departmental policy. The Substance Abuse Counselor (Part-Time) is to provide quality services in line with hospital and departmental missions, policies, and procedures, which may include assisting with departmental coverage needs.
Job Duties:
- Provide individual and group counseling as assigned to individuals receiving services regarding substance use and other relevant therapeutic topics;
- Documentation of services is entered into the medical record in a timely manner and meets quality standards for the department;
- Consult with treatment teams and attend treatment team meetings as needed or requested to guide interventions and treatment plans for clients with substance use disorders;
- Review referral information upon assignment of individuals from referral source and consult with others as needed to support coordination and accessing the appropriate level of care as indicated;
- Assist individuals receiving services to identify their need for treatment programs;
- Completes necessary continuing education to maintain certifications or licensure to perform assigned duties
Minimum Qualifications
- Master's degree in Counseling or related field
- Clinical experience providing services for individuals with substance use disorders
- Current certification in substance Abuse counseling services (CSAC)
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities to best perform:
- Knowledge of best practice in substance use assessment and treatment of adults, group and program development, and understanding of the specialized needs of adults with dual diagnosis
- Must be able to apply knowledge of the theory, techniques, and practices of counseling and substance use disorder treatment

These positions are hourly/wage and not eligible for benefits. Hourly (wage) employees may not work more than 29 hours a week and are limited to working 1500 hours in a year.
