Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicle’s Medical Review Services Unit is hiring Medical Evaluator Seniors to administer motor vehicle and related laws pertaining to the issuance of driver’s licenses and commercial driver’s licenses and the monitoring and license sanctioning of drivers identified with physical and/or mental conditions that pose a threat to public safety.
The Medical Review Services Unit conduct medical reviews of drivers to promote safety and ensure that citizens retain their driving privileges and mobility whenever possible.

Responsibilities Include:
• Conducting medical review of drivers to promote safety and ensure that citizens retain their driving privileges and mobility whenever possible
• Serving as a subject matter expert in matters related to Medical Review Services
• Reviewing and evaluating medical information, determining eligibility based on state and federal laws and regulations for a driver’s license, commercial driver’s license (CDL), bioptic-telescopic (BTL) lens certification, CDL disability waiver, and CDL hazardous materials variance
• Processing and issuing federal SPE (Skills Performance Evaluations)
• Preparing general correspondences and responding to telephone inquiries.

This position is eligible for a hybrid office/telework schedule (3 days in office, 2 days telework)

Minimum Qualifications

• Current RN or LPN Virginia state licensure
• Experience practicing as an RN or LPN in a professional healthcare setting
• Considerable knowledge of medical terminology
• Experience evaluating medical information, interpreting medical orders, and making decisions in a healthcare setting
• Familiarity with various drugs, their effects, and interactions with other drugs
• Knowledge of various disease processes
• Experience operating a computer
• Experience reading, explaining, and applying statutes, regulations, and policies
• Ability to work overtime, including on some Saturdays as required based on the needs of the work center

Additional Considerations

• Knowledgeable of how disease processes can affect a driver’s ability to operate a motor vehicle safely
• Experience reading, explaining, and applying DMV procedures and Motor Vehicle Code and standards
