Job Duties

Facilities Management's professional, customer-oriented trades people, mechanics, architects, engineers, and others are well-trained to support the NSU community. The Department of Facilities Management is seeking a dynamic and qualified Chief Mechanic to analyze Automotive Fleet maintenance performance data to develop uniform factors for determining maintenance capabilities in terms of manpower, facilities, and equipment availability. Isolate trends and determine efficiency and effectiveness. Develop and compile methods for improving maintenance planning programming effectiveness and services as Chief Automotive Mechanic. Perform fleet maintenance and operations analysis. Determine feasibility of vehicle and motorized equipment repairs versus replacing worn or defective parts. Responsible for the maintenance, upkeep and cleanliness of buses and motor vehicles to insure operation and comfort. Development, maintain and implement planned Preventive Maintenance Program and Annual Vehicle Safety Inspection Program, schedules and activities to ensure prolonged life, usefulness and safety of equipment and to minimize breakdowns or failures of mobile equipment. Responsible for supervising all vehicle maintenance personnel. Assist in the training, hiring, promotion and evaluation of employees. Supervises and inspects work of automotive mechanic assistant(s) in the repair and maintenance of automobiles and motorized equipment. Plans and schedules; monitor contract and warranty repairs and status. Review and distribute work orders to the automotive mechanic staff in order that work is performed in a timely manner. Responsible for the requisitioning of parts and services for all university owned and leased motor vehicles and motorized equipment. Prepare and maintain inventory control procedures for keys, tools, equipment and motor vehicles. Maintain equipment inventory and compile gas consumption data. Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

1. High School Diploma or equivalent.
2. Extensive years of related experience, technical training,
3. Valid Driver’s license, CDL, certification in vehicle safety inspection, and Certification for 134 Refrigerant handling.
4. Considerable knowledge of the operating systems used in motor vehicle and motorized equipment.
5. The ability to diagnose mechanical and related malfunctions to determine root causes.
6. Considerable knowledge of standard tools and equipment, test equipment procedures and practices used in the repair and preventive maintenance of fleet and motorized equipment.
7. Ability to write routine correspondences, input and track work orders, maintain logs and reports.

Additional Considerations

1. The preferred candidate will have a college degree in a related field,
2. At least 1year supervisory experience, corporate or higher education administrative experience or in a related field or an equivalent combination of education, training and professional experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities
