Job Duties

VDOT's Appomattox Area Headquarters is seeking highly skilled Highway Maintenance Operators to join their team! As the successful candidate, you will perform a combination of skilled equipment operations, preventive maintenance and heavy manual labor while conducting roadway maintenance activities. Equipment operations include but are not limited to backhoes, dump trucks, tractors and similar equipment. Positions perform emergency roadway operations and must be willing to work outside normal work hours in emergencies. This position is considered essential.

In addition to a comprehensive compensation and benefits package, a $3,000 sign-on bonus is available for qualified candidates who have a current CDL. Current VDOT employees are not eligible for the sign-on bonus.

Minimum Qualifications

• Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
• Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools.
• Safety shoes required.
• Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.
• Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions.
• Skill in the operation and maintenance of light, medium, and heavy duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
• Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures.

Additional Considerations

• Experience in emergency operations to include snow removal, storms and accident clean-up.
• Experience performing preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs.
• A combination of training, experience, or education in Maintenance, Vehicle Operations or related field desired.
• Experience in roadway maintenance and construction.
• Valid Commercial Drivers License with appropriate endorsements.
• Possesses Tanker Endorsement
• Willingness and ability to obtain DOC security and firearms training in inmate oversight.

VDOT is an emergency response agency, therefore you will work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations when services are needed.

NOTE: All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. Effective February 7, 2022, new Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL to a Class A from a Class B, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training.
